Graves at Beth Haim of 2 Baruch Lousadas and 4 spouses

Inspection of the graveplan scans (available as explained in note 1 below) revealed the above details. There is no grave for Isaac #42, but he is the common factor in all 6 graves above. His bones were moved to be with Luna #2503 (see note 3 below)! The 2nd wife of Jacob Israel Pereira was Sarah Louzada one of the Den Haag Louzadas and a great-grand-daughter of Isaac #42; the will of Jacob Israel Pereira (ref 141) gave vital evidence of the link between the families pointing us to how the Baruch Lousada exit from Iberia in the 1640s came about as an adjunct to the Israel Pereira exit.

Jacob #1388 was a son of the 1st marriage of Isaac #42, and David #44 was a son of the 2nd marriage. In this 2nd marriage, Isaac #42 was married to Luna #2503, and it was this marriage that created the link between the Baruch Lousadas and the Israel Pereiras. It occurred in Madrid abound 1638. Jacob #1388 and David #44 were half-brothers. Both were widely travelled - Jacob who was probably born in Madrid spent a period in London around 1660 with his cousin Moses #46, while David #44 who was born in Livorno spent the period 1664-72 in Barbados with his cousin Aaron #376. We have inferred that there was a Rouen meeting of cousins Jacob #1388, David #44, Moses #46 and Aaron #376 with others promoting the Amsterdam/Barbados trade as a prelude to Jacob #1388 and Moses #46 moving to London and Aaron #376 and David #44 moving to Barbados.

One of a host of interesting details emerging from inspection of the new resource concerns the father of Jacob #1765 namely Abraham Israel Pereira #1628. His death was in 1674 and the burial card may be found here https://www.dutchjewry.org/P.I.G./image/01079001.jpg and that of his 2nd and last wife Sarah who died in 1694 may be found here https://www.dutchjewry.org/P.I.G./image/01145001.jpg. His name in Madrid was Tomas Rodrigues Pereira but he adopted his new name soon after arriving in Amsterdam in 1645. Accordingly, the Abraham Rodrigues Pereira who died in 1700 (scan 5 grave #10) was not Abraham #1628. The coincidence of the wife's name (Sarah) may to some writers have been persuasive, but for the 2nd Abraham Sarah was not his last wife for she died in 1670 (scan 5 grave #10a) before Esther the last wife who died in 1700 (scan 5 grave #11). This may explain why it has often been suggested in the literature that Abraham Israel Pereira died much later than the actual 1674 ie in 1700!

Notes:

1. Ton Tielen on 6 Jan 2024 provided details of where the online digital map of Beth Haim, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel may be found. He noted that some time ago the Amsterdam City Archives had unused capacity for digitizing so he asked for the graveplan to be digitized, and with very high resolution. The results may be found here: https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/details/334/path/8.1.8/withscans/0/findingaid/334/file/1329A/start/0/limit/10/flimit/5

 2. Earlier from Sephardic Diaspora I found images which at the time were not online but were photographed by Ton Tielen at Amsterdam City Archives. In these images I found numbered #17 the grave of Esther Rodrigues da Costa, the 2nd wife (and 1st Amsterdam wife) of David Baruch Lousada #44 and as can be in the table above this has been rediscovered (in 2 pieces) in the new online resource! Ton commented that the images that I downloaded can be found by searching for Cartons in TSD.

3. The bones of Isaac #42 who died in 1667 were recovered and buried with his wife. Their burial cards (see below) tell a somewhat confusing story about this though this confusion does not prevent the preceding inference. Perhaps Isaac's grave had been moved or the location renamed during the 19 years before Luna died in 1686 - so Luna's card refers to the new location and Isaac's card below refers to the old. Alternatively, because their son David #44 was in Barbados when his father Isaac died in 1667, an extra plot may have been inadvertently reserved and though not used for Isaac the reserved location was mistakenly recorded on Isaac's card.

The Portuguese notes above (translated) cite #916 page 55 (presumably of the Burial Register) in recording that from grave 4 row 40 her husband's bones were collected in a small box by David Louzada their son. The Dutch notes (translated) state that this grave of Luna cannot be matched with the Isaac entered on card 25 - 119 (see image to the right) which shows grave 30 row 44.

The Dutch notes above (translated) cite #916 page 55 (presumably of the Burial Register) in recording that Luna, widow of Isaac, was buried beside her husband after his bones had been brought from a grave (a location of grave 30 row 44 is given). The notes above say that it is not clear whether Luna's husband Isaac is the same as this Isaac presumably because of the discrepancy in the grave location in the Portuguese (see left).
