A rather cruel caricature of 'Polly' Lyon de Symons #119 by James Gillray first published by H Humphreys on 13 July 1801. She married Baron Lyon de Symons in 1781 and was the mother-in-law of Simon Barrow of Bath. She was a Goldsmid, an Ashkenazi family which became strongly represented in Amsterdam by the end of the 1600s and, as Edgar Samuel advised us, a sister of the English loan contractors, Abraham and Benjamin Goldsmid. The Goldsmids were early in the field of English Ashkenazi/Sephardic intermarriage, for Jane Goldsmid married Emanuel Baruh Lousada #142 in 1807 and Nancy Goldsmid married Daniel Mocatta in 1801.
