1315. Victor Adolf DE DIRSZTAY
from de Dirsztay tree on www.barrow-lousada.org ref 31 but information on Viktor’s birth is contradictory - ref 342 gives birth in Budapest not Debrecen and notes date shifts between 1883 and 1889. The Vienna Stadt- und Landesarchiv refers to four different dates, first of all, 13 June 1884.8 It must also remain unclear whether Viktor grew up with his natural father or with his mother.9 What is certain is
that he had a sister Charlotte (1883–1942, who married De Menasce) and a
brother Franz (1888–1956) who was later also active as a writer (Dirsztay,
F., 1919, 1923, 1924, 1930); some sources also mention a further brother,
Andreas. Ref 342 adds Franz v. Dirsztay was adopted by Ladislaus (Kempelen, 1910, p. 33); hence he originates neither from a former marriage of Georgine Plaut nor from her premarital relationship with Ladislaus. Arthur Schnitzler mentions Franz v. Dirsztay in 1913 and 1928 in his diaries (Schnitzler, 1983, pp. 56–7, 70, 100; 1997, p. 119). Andreas (Ando´r) Dirsztay (1894–1944) is identified on the Plaut family internet site as the son of Georgine Plaut and Ladislaus v. Dirsztay (p. 11; accessed 9.12.2007). He died in Auschwitz
(Dokumentationsarchiv des o¨sterreichischen Widerstands [http://de.doew.braintrust.at/
m17sm147.html; accessed 4.12.2007])Also from ref 342: Freud himself, whom he consulted for years, could not heal him, for his disease came from his contempt of his family. [...] He suffered from world-weariness. I became aware of this when, from the upper floor of the palace in the aristocratic diplomatic district of Vienna where the family lived, Dirsztay mockingly pointed out a bundle of dirty washing left casually lying on the magnificent main staircase. On the ground floor, through the open door of the family drawing room, one could see fat bodies in underwear making a noise,
playing cards and drinking. That was what he thought of his family: an
underworld. I understood his deep disgust with such a shameless exhibition of
vulgarity; he was the prodigal son. (Kokoschka, 1971, p. 91)Ref 342 gives date of joint suicide with his ex-wife (they were divorced after 6 years of marriage)
death date from de Dirsztay tree unclear

French composer - but there may be confusion with Jean de Menasche 1902-73 an author, lawyer, theologian and priest who was at Oxford with Graham Greene - they were no doubt relatedfrom ref 342: Portrait of Jacques de Menasce [www.smb.spk-berlin.de/jpg/1827_005.jpg; accessed 28.3.2006]. De Menasce (1905–1960) studied under Arnold Scho¨nberg and became a concert pianist and composer. Kokoschka writes of the portrait (1971, p. 91): ‘A finely sculpted boy’s face; the later generation of a robust family’.

He was born near Taunton in 1941 whilst his father was oveseas in the army - who then became a DC in Tanganyika after the war and when that got independence he was asked to stay. However, he left and joined the Queen's Messengers until he finally retired. When he came back to UK he bought a house at North Curry just outside Taunton. When he died the house was sold and after a time in England Winifred joined the family in Zimbabwe and finally to Caroline who lived in Tanga in Tanzania where she died.
