death from https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/records/2240589/lieutenant-richard-george-brooke-barrow-british-army-royal-armoured-corps/?registered=true&ident=2148752&subscribedAmount=8.95&ref=2504429_GENES&printView=1

from Tony Harding:
Richard George Barrow was the son of my grandfather, Rear Admiral Benjamin Wingate Barrow, who apparently disgraced his father in some way. I am not sure I sent you my research results on Richard’s academic records at Dartmouth Naval College, followed by his (ultimately fatal) movement to a different line of military service. Peter Barrow again pointed out the hand of Gen Sir George in this change of career direction. Gen Sir George assisted my grandfather with his naval career, and this is why Richard has the second name George! On 14 sep 2016 Tony Harding advised that Richard was killed by sniper fire and that the year was 1945.

from Tony Harding 22 Oct 2011
Dear Mr Harding
Thank you for your request regarding Richard George Barrow.
According to our (limited) records R G Barrow, born 23rd April 1922, joined the Royal Naval College Dartmouth in January 1936 and passed out or graduated in August 1939. There is no indication that he left under any cloud, finishing 12th out of 38 in the second division i.e. not one of the top ‘Alpha’ class cadets but a good average student.
Should I discover any further information I will let you know. In the meantime you might be able to access his service record by contacting the Navy Records Office:

Dear Mrs McCarthy
I am the grandson of Rear Admiral Bejmamin Wingate Barrow, whose son Richard George Barrow attended Dartmouth naval college.
Richard Barrow was born in 1923, but I have no information on when he was accepted at the college, or left it.
Richard Barrow’s grave is at the Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma, where he was buried with other soldiers from the Royal Armoured Corps, 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales's Dragoon Guards). He died shortly before WW2 ended and was 22 at the time. My mother visited his grave in Burma shortly before she died in 1984.
Richard left the naval college under a cloud, according to family legend, but I cannot find any records from his time at the naval college to establish the circumstances of his leaving the college.
I would appreciate any help you can give in resolving this mystery.
Kind regards
Tony Harding

Well, this pretty much settles another part of my own family narrative!
I suspect that the ‘disgrace’ amounted to my grandfather’s disappointment that his (only) son did not achieve expectations at the Royal Naval College Dartmouth.
The ‘disgrace’ led to tragic events from which my mother never recovered emotionally.
I was given a second shot at a naval career, at the Simonstown Naval Base, but also disappointed!
Regards
Tony

Killed in action

from daughter Carlotta 1 May 2018
It was so sad we lost our father, David, he is buried in the War Cemetery La Delivrande, near Bayeux France. I went with my daughter, Anna, Peregrine's son David and his daughter Ella to visit so I felt we were 4 generations.
This death is recorded in Commonwealth War Graves (and this source appears on ancestry.com)
