Descendants of Pedro De Lousada

Notes

668. Howel Arthur Lousada

birth ref 85 p26 www.barrow-lousada.org left Cheltenham Dec 1864

On 19 Mar 1869, he gave notice of intention to apply for a publican's licence to operate the Maranoa Hotel at premises which he and his wife lived in at The Lagoons near Roma, Qld. (from Dalby Herald and Western Queensland Advertizer 27 Mar 1869). On 29 Jun 1870 H Lousada left Brisbane for Sydney on Lady Young and arrived 1 Jul 1870 and probably the same Lousada on 13 Jul left for Melbourne on Rangotira. He thus coincided in Melbourne with his brother Harry and together they engaged in saltmaking at Hastings (see recollections of Horace Frank Lousada on www.barrow-lousada.org).

Was a pioneer Gippsland settler like his younger brother Edward Charles. See www.barrow-lousada.org for early Australian involvement with his brother Edward Charles Lousada.

On 14 Nov 1882 Mr H A Lousada of Lardner was gazetted JP in the Eastern Bailiwick. On 28 Nov 1882 he asked for road improvement to Lardner's track between his place and McDonald's Track. He sold cattle on 23 Feb 1884 at Drouin. On 11 Sep 1884 he was appointed licensing magistrate for Drouin. On 4 Dec 1884 attended a meeting to consider forming a Warragul Agricultural Society. He became a newly appointed Magistrate for Torwood and Lardner as reported in the Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle 14 July 1885. On 7 Mar 1885 he attended a committee meeting of the Warragul Agricultural Society. He served as a JP in Warragul 1884-7, and he was then missed because later JP services in Warragul were not so diligently performed (as a letter published 17 Jan 1890 in the Warragul Guardian etc made clear).

The Argus on 19 Apr 1887 reported Mr and Mrs Lousada plus child were bound for Marseille on the Salania. This was not Edward Charles - he was farewelled on 21 Jul 1887. Was it Howell Arthur? If so, Elle must have been left behind as John Rochfort had been born in Feb 1887.

During the period 1887-1891 he was in Traralgon and sat on many cases as a JP. He sold cattle on 17 Nov 1888. On 17th May 1889 he attended the first anniverary of the Tyers Mechanics Institute and chaired the concert. Also in 1889 he took part in local prospecting expeditions which appeared to confirm a small quantity of shallow black coal in the Tyers district near his place but most of the coal appeared to be an extension of the Morwell brown coal seam. He left Traralgon 1 July 1891 to take up duties as a JP in Dandenong.

He was a long-serving and very busy magistrate in the 1890-1922 period for Dandenong (his early cases must have been before he moved permanently from Traralgon). During this period he seems to have spent time away eg on 11 Jan 1896 he was reported as being at Bullengrook near Bacchus Marsh, and The Australasian on 1 Jun 1901 reports a function at the Mechanics Institute where he was farewelled on his return to Warragul from Gisborne where he was thanked for his servcies as a JP and for assisting Anglican services at Gisborne and Upper Macedon. Some of his residences during his Dandenong period were Cassilis 1914,and Dandenong 1914-9. He visited Warragul on 1 Feb 1905 to attend the annual meeting of parishioners for St Pauls Church Warragul.

672. Edward Charles Lousada

Ref 85 p26 shows him at Haileybury College in 1868, and 1871 England Census shows him there also

Ref 85 www.barrow-lousada.org records some details of his departure to Australia in 1871, and ref 186 records him as arriving 20 Sep 1871 on the Yorkshire from Gravesend (his estimated birthdate is however given as 1841 which is surely incorrect). According to the 1987 recollections of his youngest son Horace Frank Lousada he first joined his brothers Harry Burningham and Howel Arthur at Hastings before coming to Brandy Creek and selecting land at Jindivick in 1874.

The recollections of his youngest son Horace Frank (on www.barrow-lousada.org) suggest he was in Traralgon for a period from the mid to late 1870s and made his entry into the stock and station business there with Alan McLean & Co. However the earliest Lousada newspaper records in Traralgon relate to his brother H A Lousada, with Edward Charles only evident 1902-5.

It waas reported in the Gippsland Times on 13 May 1878 that 20 prime young heifers were to be sold on 18 May at the Buln Buln maarket. It was reported in the Melbourne Argus of 2 May 1878 that 5 cows were sold for Mr E C Lousada of Buln Buln. It was reported in the Melbourne Leader 26 Mar 1881 that 20 vealers were sold for Mr E C Lousada of Drouin. It was reported on 20 Oct 1881 by the Warragul Guardian and Narracan Shire Advocate that on 14 Oct 1881 he brought a flock of 700 sheep and 400 lambs through Warragul. These sheep were selected by Mr Scott of the Royal Hotel Warragul from the pens of Mssrs Harrison and Co of Strathbogie and destined for Mr T B Guest's farm.

Messrs William Hamilton & Co announce 14 Jun 1883 formation of a Warragul branch with Mr C Lousada in charge. He remained in charge until his 1887 trip to England. He was in Warragul in 9 Sep 1886 when on the C of E committee he differed with some on dispodal of 6 acres of Church land pointing out the locals had no right to it. On 21 July 1887 he and his wife were given a farewell dinner prior to his pleasure trip England in 1877 during which Benjamin Barrow Lousada was born, and shipping reports have a Mr and Mrs Lousada departing Melbourne to London 31 July 1887 on the Carthage 1. No child was shown suggesting Tryphena was left behind. On return he opened a branch of Messrs William Hamilton & Co (he ran their Warragul branch before his trip) at Lilydale where he became involved in horse-racing. On 5 April 1889 he was elected to the committee of the Warragul and West Gippsland Agricultural Society. On 8 April 1890 he was reported as having retired from the Warragul School Board of Advice. On 30 June 1893 he was reported as auctioning through William Hamilton & Co a piece of land 17a 3r 7p being part of Allotment 93 parish of Drouin East county Buln Buln title certificate Register Book v1661 fol 332,197 (perhaps this is the piece of land shown on the title as 18a 3r 7p). On 13 April 1894 he was reported as having been appointed the representative of Messrs Hamilton & Co in the district. He was in Warragul where he wrote to the Warragul Guardian on 15 Jul 1894 on the subject of better organizing butter manufacture to ensure a uniform flavour in the light of varying diet of the cows when the preferred grass was eaten.

A newspaper report of 16 Feb 1897 reported that Messrs Skews and Patterson have decided to try their luck in WA and so disposed of their business to Messrs Lousada, Hunter and Stephen. On 17 June 1898 he was working for Skews & Patterson of Warragul as shown by a letter he wrote to the Warragul Guardian on a town band. In 1899 still in Warragul - for as reported on 9 Jun by the Morwell Advertiser 8yr old son (Barrow) was nearly killed in level crossing accident (the 2pm train from Neerim South killed the horse and smashed the jig - Barrow jumped clear on the urgent advice of a bystander Mrs Currie). On 7 Feb 1899 it was announced that the partnership of E C Lousada, E J Hunter and G V Stephen trading as Skews ansd Patterson had been dissolved. In Warragul 25 Dec 1900 - Barrow, Edward (twice) and Aubrey win Prep School prizes.

Catherine, Ruth and Cecil appeared in annual school show at Mechanics Institute Traralgon 19 Dec 1902. Lived in Traralgon 1903 (Australian Electoral Rolls) and his 2 oldest children were confirmed in Calignee in 1903 a settlement to the south of Traralgon. B (probably Ben) Lousada takes 7/19 (all bowled) against Gormandale for Callignee but to no avail as Callignee lost! Around 1905 still lived at Calignee but moved back to Warragul - there is a newspaper report covering his fall from a horse-dawn cart which reveals this.

His move to Toora is not known in detail, but was known there in 1908. In 1911 he was farming on the share system the property of Mr R H Downing about 1km from the Toora Station on the railway line. He was very profitably milking 65 cows throughout the year with the cream going to the Foster butter factory and the skim milk going to 9 brood sows. Pumpkins were used to provide solid feed for the pigs.

He farmed at Clanville, Kardella South in the period around 1917. His letter of 17 Oct 1917 is on the subject of an appeal for eggs and how it might be better arranged while his 28 Nov 1918 letter (both to the Great Southern Advocate) favours a dry Korumburra Agricultural Show. He won a prize for maize-growing at the 1921 Korumburra A&P Society competitions.

He was living in East Malvern around 21 May 1929 when he wrote to The Argus on his recollections of Cobb&Co. He attended the 50 year jubilee of St Marks Warragul on 6 Dec 1930 and spoke on the occasion. The obituary of EC Lousada in the Warrugul and West Gippsland Gazette of 5 April 1932 refers to a brother-in-law C S Affleck living close by in Tetoora. It also mentions his brother (Howel Arthur) who occupied the Torwood Estate. It also reveals that he lost money in the Land Boom and became a dairy farmer at Korumburra (ignoring his Traralgon and Toora phases).

Death from The Argus 26 Mar 1932; detail on place of death The Argus 20 Apr 1932 - an an obituary shows he was living at the Vicarage at Lilydale which was the home of his daughter Ruth, married to Rev Hedley G White

from Victoria Police Gazettes 23 Sep 1905 he reported while a farmer at Callignee on the night of 13 Sep 1905 that his bay medium draught mare was stolen (thus he was not in Toora until late 1905 or early 1906 at the earliest

In 1887 he and his wife were given a farewell dinner prior to
his pleasure trip England in 1877 during which Benjamin Barrow Lousada was born, and shipping reports have a Mr and Mrs Lousada departing Melbourne to London 31 July 1887 on the Carthage 1. On 20 June 1893 he was reported as auctioning through William Hamilton & Co a piece of land 17a 3r 7p being part of Allotment 93 parish of Drouin East county Buln Buln title certificate Register Book v1661 fol 332,197 (perhaps this is the piece of land shown on the title as 18a 3r 7p).

The Memorial stands on the high ground ('Hill 104') behind the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Fouilloy, which is about 2 km north of Villers-Bretonneux on the east side of the road to Fouilloy.  The Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux is approached through the Military Cemetery, at the end of which is an open grass lawn which leads into a three-sided court. The two pavilions on the left and right are linked by the north and south walls to the back (east) wall, from which rises the focal point of the Memorial, a 105 foot tall tower, of fine ashlar. A staircase leads to an observation platform, 64 feet above the ground, from which further staircases lead to an observation room. This room contains a circular stone tablet with bronze pointers indicating the Somme villages whose names have become synonymous with battles of the Great War; other battle fields in France and Belgium in which Australians fought; and far beyond, Gallipoli and Canberra.  On the three walls, which are faced with Portland stone, are the names of 10,885 Australians who were killed in France and who have no known grave. The 'blocking course' above them bears the names of the Australian Battle Honours.  After the war an appeal in Australia raised £22,700, of which £12,500 came from Victorian school children, with the request that the majority of the funds be used to build a new school in Villers-Bretonneux. The boys' school opened in May 1927, and contains an inscription stating that the school was the gift of Victorian schoolchildren, twelve hundred of whose fathers are buried in the Villers-Bretonneux cemetery, with the names of many more recorded on the Memorial. Villers-Bretonneux is now twinned with Robinvale, Victoria, which has in its main square a memorial to the links between the two towns.

The attack on the Farm began at 0445 on 26th August. The 21st Battalion approached the objective from the south east with its left flank being guarded by a limited forward attack by the 22nd Battalion. On the 21st Battalion’s right, the 24th Battalion would use bombers (grenadiers) to attack the eastern defences of the Farm. With seven Brigades of artillery – 4 field and 3 heavy – providing the barrage, the initial advance by the 21st was rapid: too rapid in fact as most of the attacking infantry passed the Farm and became entangled in the defences behind it. They were eventually either killed (many by running into their own barrage) or captured. Only a handful of the Victorians returned to their own lines. Those that did occupy their given objectives at once came under heavy attack from the Germans emerging from their deep shelters. Shortages of grenades had made dealing with all the underground shelters difficult.

In this attack, the 6th Brigade lost 896 out of a fighting strength of 2500, with the 21st Battalion losing 13 officers and 444 men. They had encountered a considerably reinforced German defensive position, including many elements of Prussian Guard Reserve Corps.

from: http://fffaif.org.au/?p=1127
The Australian War Memorial describes the fighting at Mouquet Farm as:
the site of nine separate attacks by three Australian divisions between 8 August and 3 September 1916. The farm stood in a dominating position on a ridge that extended north-west from the ruined, and much fought over, village of Pozieres. Although the farm buildings themselves were reduced to rubble, strong stone cellars remained below ground which were incorporated into the German defences. The attacks mounted against Mouquet Farm cost the 1st, 2nd and 4th Australian Divisions over 11,000 casualties, and not one succeeded in capturing and holding it. The British advance eventually bypassed Mouquet Farm leaving it an isolated outpost. It fell, inevitably, on 27 September 1916.
and
The significance of the battle for the men who fought it is perhaps best described in the official 21st Battalion history: We have been in hotter holes since then but never has the Battalion suffered under intense shellfire for such long periods and with such little movement. The casualty lists bear this out. The conditions were vile. The weather being hot and everyone fully occupied on other tasks, the dead lay unburied for weeks and the stench was frightful. To come through a period such as this and then go on fighting is evidence of the temper of the British armies in general and of our unit in particular … under the heading of the First Battle of the Somme is told the story of our first and heaviest try out. The time which is vividly imprinted in the memories of those who saw the whole show through.

Barrow's medical record shows that he had a hammer toe - and Aubrey remembered finding it. As the Red Cross reports (on www.barrow-lousada.org) while differing on what hit Barrow agree that he suffered a mortal head wound, his body must have been destroyed by an incoming shell. It would however have been miraculous for Aubrey to have found the toe, as this would have meant a dangerous passage over heavily shelled ground, particularly as the Australians had to retreat from Mouquet Farm. Aubrey's find did not lead to a formal burial - Barrow was commemorated at Villers-Bretonneux.

DSM

was in Galipoli 8 Sep 1915 as a letter of that date from Pte Cecil Lousada of Toora appeared in the South Gippsland Shire Echo 12 Nov 1915

was a gunner when he died - there is a family belief that his brother Bombardier Aubrey George Lousada arranged to have Cecil transfer to this role in the hope that this would be safer. On 10 Feb 2017 Diana Mayne advised as follows 'I asked David again this morning about his mother's description of Cecil's death;  it was a faulty shell which exploded in the breech of the gun killing Cecil and all the crew.  This was the day after her 20th birthday. (COMMENT: in fact we do not know Evelyn Mary Tiarks' exact birthdate and there is some uncertainty about Cecil's death date - see below. But the 2 dates were certainly not far apart). What a tragedy for everyone who knew him!' Aubrey himself (as recalled by Barry Smith in his 11 Feb 2017 email) was sure Cecil was killed by a direct hit on his tent from a shell and unsuccessfully tended the mortally-wounded Cecil.

Australian Gunner 1724 Cecil StLeger Lousada of Australian Field Artillery died on 10/04/1918 - this is from http://www.inmemories.com/Cemeteries/querrieu.htm - which is a report of a private visit to Commonwealth graves. Death dates of both 10 Apr 1918 and 11 Apr 1918 were provided by Australian War Memorial 27 Dec 2016 as shown on www.barrow-lousada.org. As 10 April appears on the gravestone we take it. Of course this date is one week earlier than the date of 17 Apr 1918 provided in the notes for his brother Barrow (this coming from Barrow's service record - the relevant extract is '1724 Pte Cecil St Leger LOUSADA DCM MSM, 14th Field Artillery Brigade, died of wounds 17 April 1918'). [Wikipedia.org]
Gertrude Bacon (19 April 1874 - 22 December 1949) was an aeronautical pioneer. She achieved a considerable number of "firsts" for women in aeronautics, as well as making contributions in the areas of astronomy and botany. Gertrude popularized aeronautics through her writing, and promoted both commercial and popular flying as fields for women.

Early life

Gertrude was born at Cambridge, to John Mackenzie Bacon (19 June 1846 '96 26 December 1904) and his first wife, Gertrude Myers. The family moved in 1876 to Cold Ash, Berkshire, near Newbury. Gertrude's father, John Mackenzie Bacon was an astronomer, aeronaut, and scientist, who educated his children at home.[1]

Gertrude became her father's scientific collaborator in both astronomy and aeronautics. She was an original member of the British Astronomical Association, and a member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.[2]
Astronomy

She accompanied her father on expeditions to film total solar eclipses in Vadso, Lapland (1896), Buxar, India (Dec 1897-1898), and Wadesborough, North Carolina (May 1900).[2] When their first expedition was unsuccessful, due to cloudy weather, they went home and planned another. Their second and third attempts were successful.
Aeronautics

Aeronautics fascinated Gertrude. She was the first woman in England to make a proper balloon ascent, with her father, in 1898.[3] A more hair-raising balloon flight occurred on 15 November 1899, when John Mackenzie Bacon and Gertrude Bacon ascended with Stanley Spencer to observe the Leonid meteor shower from above the cloud layer. Ten hours later, they landed near Neath, South Wales, a narrow escape from drifting out over the Atlantic.[4]

Gertrude was undeterred. In August 1904, she accompanied Stanley Spencer again, this time in an airship of his designing. As a result, she became the first woman to fly in an airship. She is also credited as the first Englishwoman to fly in an airplane. Roger Sommer took her up in a Farman biplane on 29 Aug 1909, during the First International aviation gathering at Rheims, France. She also flew with Douglas Graham Gilmour in a 'Big Bat' monoplane in 1910.[2]

Gertrude was the first passenger in a seaplane.[2] She accompanied pilot Herbert Stanley Adams in flights on Windermere in mid-1912. Adams had made the first successful complete flight from water and safely back again, in Britain, on 25 November 1911.[5]

Through her books, and through public speeches, Bacon popularized aeronautics.
Botany

In 1901, Gertrude joined the Wild Flower Society, adding botany to her list of interests and achievements. On 23 July 1923, Gertrude Bacon and botanist and illustrator Lady Joanna Charlotte Davy (1865-1955)[6] made the first discovery of Carex microglochin or Bristle Sedge in Great Britain.[7]

In 1929, Gertrude Bacon married a fellow botanist and chemist, Thomas Jackson Foggitt (2 Mar 1858 - 30 Oct 1934). Gertrude was his second wife, and outlived him by 15 years.[8]
