Lived in America
Jan from Ed treedeath certificate provided by Diana Moore from Archives Departementales, Conseil general dea Cotes-d'Armor #261 wirnessed by Benjamin Barrow aged 76
on 22 Sep 2016 Diane Moore wrote ''I am writing a bilingual book about the English-speaking community which lived in Dinan, France, in the 19th century. Jacob Lyon Barrow died in Dinan in 1890 and is buried in the English Cemetery which I am currently charting. I was wondering if you might have a photograph of him as I am keen to illustrate my book as much as possible. Of course, all credits will be acknowledged. Also buried in the same cemetery are James Stark Skipper and his wife Emma.''
and on 26 Sep ''If you do find something to do with Jacob Lyon Barrow it would be great. He is mentioned quite frequently in the hitherto unpublished diaries of an Anglo-French gentleman who lived in Dinan at the time. Barrow lived in a very impressive mansion called La Foresterie in Léhon, just outside Dinan.''
on 27 Sep ''On his death certificate it just says Jacob Barrow, likewise on the gravestone. I came across the name Lyon when searching online...in conjunction with Joseph Lyon Barrow. In my work I am just using Jacob Barrow. '' and
''The reason why I gave Jacob the Lyon middle name by mistake was because Joseph had it and as they both died in 1890, I got muddled!! However, Joseph died in Southampton and Jacob in Dinan.''
and ''He was buried by the Anglican church in Dinan and his name appears in the register of burials. I only discovered his Jewish connections through your website. There is no Jewish section to the cemetery. It is interesting that his next of kin opted for a granite cross. Many graves just have slabs or headstones. The author of the diaries says that there were very few people at his funeral.
Would you by any chance have photos of Joseph Lyon Barrow? The Barrows are listed as having been in Dinan since at least 1876. The census for that year is interesting (attached). Maybe some of the names of his children might ring a bell?''DEATH: Also shown as Died Dinan, Place Duguesdin.

would have been Jacob after maternal grandfather if family had remained Jewish
He lived on the Isle of Wight before moving to Peak House for the following appears in Henry Roche's 'Jews of the Isle of Wight' - Sons born in RYDE 1848,1850 (1846 Brighton, 1851 Winchester) C1851
he inherited Peak House from his uncle Emanuel #142 in 1854 and lived there until aound 1877 when habitation apparently ceased (ref: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/physical/view/17) and the new Peak House was built around 1910. Emanuel #87 the founder of Peak House built Cliff Cottage around 1820 (ref: http://www.parksandgardens.org/places-and-people/site/4987?preview=1) but it was demolished as part of the creation of Connaught Gardens opened in 1934.
In the 1881 census, Annie E Lousada 33 and two 'granddaughters' Kate Anni 5 and Norah Agnes 4 lived with JB, Tryphena and Constance
Norah Agnes arrived in Autralia 1906 and worked as a nurse, presumably dying in Australia
Annie Ellen presumably her mother was born in Canada and lived in Australia, presumably dying in AustraliaJohn Bury says: I have read in Sidmouth history (probably Peter Orlando Hutchinson, the Sidmouth diarist and general busybody) about the arrival of a new lifeboat for the town - it came by train! - and the procession which accompanied it down to the seafront being headed by the 2nd Devon Volunteers under the command of Colonel Lousada. This was in 1869, so would have been JBL.
This agrees with the death notice of his Australian son Harry B Lousada referring to his father as Colonel

This wife had 13 children but it is not clear how many were natural sons of Gen Joseph Lyon Barrow. It seems Owen Sydney was.
in the Dinan census of 1876 (provided by Diana Moore in Sep 2016) Emily Frances is given as 41 hence born 1835 or perhaps late 1834
11 children are given with Grace and Constance yet to be born
On 12 June Sheila Anne Gordon on geni.com commented 'My connection to the Barrows is rather distant (apparently Simon Barrow of Bath is my 15th cousin four times removed!), but I have actually been looking at them as I work my way downwards from an early ancestor of my husband's. Simon Barrow's son Major General Joseph Lyon Barrow married Emily Frances McMaster, the daughter of Bryce McMaster and Mary Letitia Munbee. She was the daughter of Major Valentine Munbee (1740-1810) and Letitia Young. Major Valentine was the son of Valentine Munbee (and Elizabeth Warden), but this Valentine's wife was Bridget Beckford, and her nephew Ballard Beckford (1732-1764) is my husband's 6th great grandfather. The Munbees are a fascinating family, as are the Beckfords and I find that once I start trying to find out more about one of them I soon get distracted by other members of the family!'

The above makes her a daughter of William barrow and Ella Ellen Bessant, who were married Southampton in 1864.
They do not seem to be members of our Barrow family - William Brett Barrow #752 of the 1st marriage of Joseph Lyon Barrow was born 1852 and could not have had a 1864 marriage! William Francis Barrow #1115 1855-1933 could not have either and in fact married Alice Louisa Were.
Kathleen Marion Barrow born abt 1871 Ryde, Isle of Wight is shown clearly in the 1881 Census as a daughter of Joseph Lyon Barrow (widower). There is no GRO birth that matches this except that above - but that girl died in 1873 whereas KMB #787 is alive in 1881. She has no marriage nor death date

DEATH OF MAJOR-GENERAL L. BARROW
It was with deep regret that we record the death of a most distinguished officer, Major-General Lousada BARROW, C.B., (the brother of our Mayor B. BARROW, Esq,) which event occurred on Monday, at Southlands. The deceased officer served in the Southern Mahratta country in 1844-45, Commanded a squadron of Volunteer Cavalry raised under the orders of Major-General Henry HAVELOCK, on the 25th June, 1857; was present and commanded them at the following actions; battle of Futtehpore 12th July 1857; in the morning action at Oung 15th July 1857, and in the action at Pando Nuddee on the evening of the same day; battle of Cawnpoor 16th July 1857, expedition to Bythoor, and capture of 19 guns, 19th July 1857; action at Oonoa in Oude, and actions at Busseerut Gunge in August two other actions at Busseerrut Gunge prior to retreating across the Ganges on the 13th August to Cawnpore; action at Bithoor 16th August re-crossed the Ganges in the face of the enemy 19th September, action at Alumbagh 23rd September, entrance into Lucknow, for the relief of the garrison on the 26th September, was besieged , and engaged in the defence of Lucknow from 26th September to 21st November, when the night retreat was made, action at Guillee in Lucknow on the 22nd December; was at the defence of the entrenched position at Alumbagh, and engaged in four actions under Sir James OUTRAM, besides many other skirmishes against the enemy during January and February 1858; present at the siege and final capture of Lucknow in March (Medal with two clasps, Brevets of Major and Lieutenant-Colonel, and C.B., and received in orders the special notice of the Commander-in-Chief and Governor-General), in recognition of his distinguished service in the field, as well as his high administrative abilities, he was raised to the important and elevated post of Chief Commissioner of the Province of Oude, in which he rendered the most valuable services to Government, and endeared himself to the people under his rule. He was essentially a type of the class of soldier-diplomats and administrators, who adorned the grand old Indian Service; brave in the field and sagacious in the council; and his name will ever hold a high place in their distinguished role, by the side if those of LAWRENCE, NICHOLSON, EDWARDES,OUTRAM, and many more of the same heroic mould.
The funeral took place on Thursday at the Ryde Cemetery. We may add that we have received our information from one totally unconnected to the family, and without their knowledge even.

ISLE OF WIGHT OBSERVER Saturday 16th Jan 1886, page 5DEATH OF COLONEL BARROW
Our obituary records the death at Cairo, on 13th inst., of Colonel Percy Harry Stanley BARROW, of the 19th Reg., a nephew of our respected Mayor, after only one day's illness.
The Standard correspondent's account appears in today's issue as follows:- I regret to state that Colonel BARROW, who re-opened an old wound while engaged in the game of tent-pegging, died last night. His funeral this afternoon was attended by almost every officer of the garrison. His loss will be greatly felt, especially in his regiment, the 19th Hussars, for which he has done so much during the short time he has held the Coloneley. At the funeral, Count BELLEGARDE and a large number of dignitaries both civil and military, were present. The funeral ceremony took place with full military honours.further notes from Edmund Barrow 11 Jul 2017

The following emerges from the published information. He emigrated to Tasmania being appointed JP for the Island of Van Diemen's Land 26 Jan 1842 - Courier Hobart 28 Jan 1842. He was Police Magistrate at Bothwell.
A son was born in Hobart in 25 May 1843 - Colonial Times 30 May 1843. This was Cecil Montefiore. The next unnamed son was born in Tasmania in August 1845 - see our notes for Seymour who was christened on Norfolk Island in early (we suggest) 1846. Barrow left Bothwell in late 1845 for Norfolk Island.
He was appointed as Stipendiary Magistrate on Norfolk Island as part of an official plan to toughen up conditions there in reaction to the moderate regime (which used probation) of Maconochie. Barrow was thus in Norfolk Island during the latter stages of Major Childs' occupancy of the Governorship, and thus during Childs' Riot of July 1846 (for which Barrow's action in removing convicts' cooking pots appears to have been responsible). The punishment of those involved in Childs' Riot occurred under the next Governor the John Price. After Childs' Riot and its aftermath Samuel Barrow returned to Hobart on 27 Oct 1846 ( https://linctas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_AU/names/search/results?qu=Barrow&rw=132&st=PA#). He appeared in the 1848 Census as resident at High Street Oatlands in a house owned by John Golder and he sat on a case in Hobart in 1849.
He traveled to Melbourne in June 1850 on the Shamrock to become the first superintendent of Pentridge Stockade in 1950. Victoria became a separate colony in 1851, just before the goldrushes. Barrow reported to the Victorian Parliament as Superintendent of Penal Establishment (1851 and 1852), Superintendent of Penal Establishments (1853) and then Inspector-General of Penal Establishments later in 1853. After 39 months in these roles he became Immigration Agent for the State of Victoria but soon drowned on Port Phillip Bay 5 May 1854. His grave is at Melbourne General Cemetery Royal Park.
Price was later - in 1857 - murdered in Williamstown, a mode of death that Nicholas Shakespeare in ref 46 incorrectly extends to Barrow - who of course died accidentally by drowning in 1854 as shown by the Inquest (available in Victorian State Archives). Price became Inspector-General of Penal Establishments in Victoria from Jan 1854 ie before Barrow drowned.
In the 1861 Census, Cecil (17) and Seymour(15) are shown in the household of Dr Benjamin Barrow. Emily is shown in the household of Rev John Simeon Barrow in the 1861 Census

A son was born in Hobart in 25 May 1843 - Colonial Times 30 May 1843.
He was appointed as Stipendiary Magistrate on Norfolk Island in 1846, as part of an official plan to toughen up the slightly moderate regime (which used probation) of Maconochie. He must have returned to Hobart as he sat on a case in Hobart in 1849.
He was the first superintendent of Pentridge in 1950; becoming Superintendent of Prisons (1851 and 1853). Victoria became a separate colony in 1851, just before the goldrushes.
Emily was born in Hobart on Dec 16 1854 (from ancestry.com).

BIRTH: Also shown as Born 28 Feb 1861
As per the 1861 Census, Simon Barrow was living in this son's household - he was aged 74. Also there was his sister Fanny Esther Barrow 40.
Also in the household were Emily 6 (niece), John Willoughby 4 (nephew), Edmund George Barrow 7 (nephew) and William Brett Barrow 9 (nephew).
Edmund George Barrow appears to be Sir Edmund George Barrow #700 son of Gen Joseph Lyon Barrow #223 (product of the shorter - Alicia Egan - marriage). He was born East Indies.
Emily appears to be daughter of Samuel - correct age and birthplace Tasmania
We cannot place John Willoughby b1857 and William Brett b1852. They were born East Indies - either side of the date of Edmund George - suggesting they are brothers of Edmund George
