1837 Marriage entry records him as a widower and also a police constable.
One record we found of the 1848 Marriage for Mary Bridger doesn't actually name him - but he appears to have used the name Frederick Phillips (GRO Index Jul-Sep 1848 Whitechapel Vol 2 Page 529

Suspected to be in Debtors' Prison in 1841 - could be for the theft below

The 1845 court "appearance" also suggests that he was a police constable in K Division for a short time, but soon after leaving the police force he and is wife were "apprehended on a charge of obtaining a large twelfth cake from a confectioner in The Poultry - subsequentlytried and convicted at The Old Bailey."

On 10 Nov 2017 by email Simon Greenfield commented - Evidence for Francis Aguilar\ Phillips being a policeman comes courtesy of his 12/11/1837 marriage to Mary Bridger where the register records his occupation as police constable. Interestingly the register also records him as a widower. Unfortunately I’ve not managed to find any information about this previous marriage. Corroborating evidence for his occupation is found in several newspaper reports. The first is a court report in the Morning Chronicle dated 6/3/1838 where reference is made of him being formerly a constable in K Division (article attached).....the Daily News dated 20/6/1846 where Francis......in court for an alleged forgery.......is described thus “Francis Aguilar, formerly a constable belonging to the K Division of the Metropolitan Police, and who is...........This is presumably how Charles Pilcher came to know Francis well enough that his wife was present at Francis and Mary Bridger’s wedding. At another court appearance reported in The Times on the 30/12/1845 on page 8 two witnesses gave evidence that as former constables in K Division they knew Francis as another former constable in the same division. As Francis states himself he was a police constable, if only for a short time.

Marriage Notes for Francis Aguilar and Louise Robertson

probably not married - Alan Pereira advice by email 9 Nov 2017

on 10 Nov 2017 Simon Greenfield added - With regard to Louisa Robertson I’d agree with Alan that they didn’t marry. Banns were read at St. Mary, Islington on 3rd May, 10th May & 17th May 1846 for the forthcoming marriage of Frederick Napoleon De Aguilar(!) and Louisa Robertson. The register of the banns records Frederick as a widower (surprise surprise), Louisa a spinster. Whereas other entries on the page have a subsequent marriage date entered, their record has “out” recorded next to it. This suggests that the marriage didn’t take place and I can’t find any other reference to a subsequent marriage.

They had a son Henry James born 18/9/1846 but baptised 27/3/1849 as the child of Francis Aguilar and Louisa Robertson. He died shortly after and was buried 11/4/1849 under the name Henry Robertson (suggesting that his parents did indeed not marry).

426. John Baruh Lousada

would have been Jacob after maternal grandfather if family had remained Jewish

He lived on the Isle of Wight before moving to Peak House for the following appears in Henry Roche's 'Jews of the Isle of Wight' - Sons born in RYDE 1848,1850 (1846 Brighton, 1851 Winchester) C1851

he inherited Peak House from his uncle Emanuel #142 in 1854 and lived there until aound 1877 when habitation apparently ceased (ref:  http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/physical/view/17) and the new Peak House was built around 1910. Emanuel #87 the founder of Peak House built Cliff Cottage around 1820 (ref: http://www.parksandgardens.org/places-and-people/site/4987?preview=1) but it was demolished as part of the creation of Connaught Gardens opened in 1934.

In the 1881 census, Annie E Lousada 33 and two 'granddaughters' Kate Anni 5 and Norah Agnes 4 lived with JB, Tryphena and Constance

Norah Agnes arrived in Autralia 1906 and worked as a nurse, presumably dying in Australia
Annie Ellen presumably her mother was born in Canada and lived in Australia, presumably dying in Australia

John Bury says: I have read in Sidmouth history (probably Peter Orlando Hutchinson, the Sidmouth diarist and general busybody) about the arrival of a new lifeboat for the town - it came by train! - and the procession which accompanied it down to the seafront being headed by the 2nd Devon Volunteers under the command of Colonel Lousada. This was in 1869, so would have been JBL.

This agrees with the death notice of his Australian son Harry B Lousada referring to his father as Colonel

would have been Jacob after maternal grandfather if family had remained Jewish

he inherited Peak House from his uncle Emanuel #142 in 1854 and lived there until aound 1877 when habitation apparently ceased (ref:  http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/physical/view/17) and the new Peak House was built around 1910.

663. Mortimer John Lousada

Birthdate from gravestone - John Bury. See his house at Ryde on www.barrow-lousada.org

Not much is known of his life - perhaps he took a trip to Australia from New Zealand in 1865 - see ref 186 - but it is much more like that this trip was taken by his brother Harry who months later took delivery of a package from Dunedin

BIRTH: Also shown as Born Brighton East Sussex.

DEATH: Also shown as Died Isle of Wight.

664. Harry Burningham Lousada

birth ref 85 p26 www.barrow-lousada.org - left school at Cheltenham 1854

he appears in Victorian shipping news (The Age 25 Jan 1866) as having imported a package from Dunedin on the Claud Hamilton on 18 Jan 1866. Perhaps he arrived first in Australia in 1865 (see ref 186 of www.barrow-lousada.org which seems to have a few errors) as the ship he came on was the Tararua which is a NZ name and it came from Bluff Harbour a probable intermediate stop on the Dunedin-Melbourne trip.

Travelled by ship via New York 24 Sep 1868 (NY Passenger lists)
Sydney Mail 6 February 1869 records Lousada arriving from Panama and Wellington on the Ruahine on 3 Feb 1869
Sydney Mail 13 Feb 1869 records H B Lousada sailing for Melbourne on the Wonga Wonga on 6 Feb

A Lousada arrived Hobson's Bay 30 Apr 1870 on the Western 'from Portland via Belfast = Port Fairy' (see Argus 2 May 1870) - this was probably H B Lousada.

On 29 Jun 1870 H Lousada left Brisbane for Sydney on Lady Young (probably H A Lousada who was in Roma in early 1869) arrived 1 Jul 1870 and probably the same Lousada on 13 Jul left for Melbourne on Rangotira.

Thus around 1870 the 2 brothers coincided in Melbourne and together they engaged in saltmaking at Hastings (see recollections of Horace Frank Lousada on www.barrow-lousada.org).

The South Australian Register 25 Sep 1878 has him as an auctioneer at Maitland (ref: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/42991710)
In Echuca 17 Nov 1873 attending inaugural ball at new Shire Hall and also in Echuca 21 Jul 1874 - attended meeting of Millewa Club; on 6 Aug the 3rd AGM of the Millewa Club was held with Mr Lousada the Secretary; he was in Echuca on 12 Mar 1875 which is the date of a letter he wrote with others protesting at the publication of unjust statements made in the press about a Mr Boyd and strangualtion; and on 28th July 1875 as shown by a letter he wrote to the Riverine Herald disclaiming an advertisement placed in his name; he was made bankrupt in Echuca 1876 (http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/7430196). He was of Mathoura Station 1877 (see Peak House sale authorisation on www.barrow-lousada.org). First secretary of the Maitland Agricultural Horticultural and Floricultural Society elected in 1878. Agent for Colonial Life Isurance Society 12 Jun 1878 Maitland SA. 5th July 1878 granted Auctioneer's licence - Moonta SA. Advertised as Auctioneer and Land Agent at Maitland on 10 Dec 1878. Present in Maitland SA 20 Mar 1879. On 2 May 1882 he was farewelled from Maitland from a place in which he was assaulted - South Australian Register 5 Feb 1879.

There is a shipping record 27 Sep 1883 arriving Fremantle from Geraldton on the Otway, then 7 Jun 1884 arriving Fremantle from Cossack and 8 Dec 1884 arriving Albany from Fremantle, arriving back in Fremantle 13 Jan 1885. Sailed 14 Feb 1886 Fremantle to Albany. The West Australian on 3 May 1884 carried an AMP advertisement showing HB Lousada as a general canvassing agent. Around 1884, a syndicate was formed to publish a daily morning paper at Fremantle. The elite of Perth were among the shareholders - including H B Lousada. Unfortuntely the new venture failed and was absorbed by the Perth Daily News.

Married 1887 and at marriage date he was living in Melbourne. There is a shipping record of a trip to Sydney on the marriage day. He appears to have been the owner or co-owner of The Levite which won the Hotham Handicap in 1887 to be sent to Perth for the Perth Cup.

An advertisement appeared in the Inquirer and Commercial News Perth 9 May 1888 for Bury&Louasada Accountants, Land Estate Financial and General Agents 15 Phoenix Chambers Market Street Melbourne NB Special attention given to West Australian commissions. The Daily News Perth on 26 Apr 1888 shows a liquidation notice dated 9 Apr 1888 issued by Thomas Eaton Bury of Bury&Lousada

On 9 Jun 1894 he was a representative of the AMP Society. Died April 1901 in Fremantle - the obituary in the Western Mail Sat 13 April 1901 says he was an AMP agent. On 5th April 1901 he was seized with an apoplectic fit while escorting a relative to the railway station and was still unconscious 9 Apr 1901. He had been working very hard in connection with the preparation of the census.

birth ref 85 p26 www.barrow-lousada.org - left school at Cheltenham 1854

he appears in Victorian shipping news (The Age 25 Jan 1866) as having imported a package from Dunedin on the Claud Hamilton on 18 Jan 1866.

681. Nina Evelyn Lousada

married a widower with 2 sons according family records - Anthony Gordon (email 2 may 2012)

BIRTH: Also shown as Born Hollington Sussex.

682. William Poulett Lousada

from family records (Peter Lousada email 1 May 2012), there is a "French" story that a member of the family brought Napoleon III into exile in Kent which accounts for the "fact" that Napoleon I's campaign cutlery chest was presented to the British Museum by a Lousada. The donor was rumoured to be William Poulet Lousada, MC, Major, Royal Norfolks and man about town. He continued to drive a four-in hand around London well after 1918

Peter Lousada email 8 Dec 2015 added:
It is rumoured, and today I am the monger, that Great Uncle Willie Lousada, MC, Royal Norfolk Regiment, acquired from someone in the family the Chest of Cutlery (which Napoleon I would have taken to Russia on his ill-fated campaign to Russia) and Willie gave it to the British Museum. I have not checked but that seems a bit unlikely as Willie never had much money and had married a chorus girl called Maudie, so was perpetually short of readies. He would surely have sold it, if he ever had it. He was last heard of retired in Hove (near Brighton) where he took great delight in beating the young tearaways from the traffic lights in his supercharged Morris Minor. It must have reminded him of the glory days when he drove fairly fast cars at Brooklands and a four-in-hand around London. The story of where the chest came from is even more of a rumour but it was said that the Duke of L was an equerry to Napoleon III and he brought Empress Eugenie to London when things got too hot for the royal couple in Paris, together with the chest. As you know, they set up Court at Chislehurst in Kent. I never really believed all that stuff and tried to check on it when staying at a large house in the country which had a full set of "Illustrated London News" of the period. No mention of any Lousada, nor of any particular Equerry! Nor of a K,F,S and mug which had gone missing!

He continued to drive a four-in hand around London well after 1918; until he ran out of money and had to marry a rich widow. The rich widow probably was a Mrs. Lloyd from N. Wales (4000 acres!) and changed her name to Lloyd Lousada but failed to leave him any money when she died before him. He died at Hove. A good friend can remember being taken to tea in his youth with Mrs. LL and described her as a grande dame.

Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797)

A study of a wall with a house

c.1773

Pencil and watercolour

28.8 x 42.1 cm

Probably by descent from the artist to his great-granddaughter Margaret Romana Simpson; donated to Derby Museum and Art Gallery, either by Charles Bemrose in 1914 or by Florence May Lousada in 1937; presented by Derby Borough Council, 1971

By the time Joseph Wright of Derby departed for Italy in order to undertake a Grand Tour in 1773 he had already completed the paintings which had made his name in London and for which he is still best known. These included the scenes of scientific experimentation A philosopher lecturing on the orrery in Derby Museum and Art Gallery and Experiment on a bird in the air pump in the National Gallery, London.

Wright sailed for Italy on 1 November 1773 and stopped en route at Nice, where bad weather prolonged his stay for three weeks. During this time he made a number of wash drawings of buildings in and around the town, sometimes sketching side-by-side with John Downman (1750-1824), who was accompanying him. This study of a wall with a house was probably executed during this time, prior to Wright’s arrival in Rome. A drawing from the Oppé collection now in the Tate Gallery, Nice: a tower on a hill, is inscribed in the top left-hand corner with the number 244. The number 224 inscribed in the same position on the present sheet may indicate precedence, suggesting that this drawing may have been made in the south of France in the winter of 1773.

Naturally Wright sought out and was inspired by the light effects he saw during his Grand Tour, which included the annual fireworks display in Rome, and the spectacular eruption of Vesuvius which he witnessed in October 1774. He also made a number of sketches of the interior of the Colosseum, capturing the subtle effects of light and shade created by the sweeping internal structure of the building and the scarified textures of the ancient stones. This watercolour drawing of a house built into a brick wall, although a comparatively modest subject, is consonant with these studies in its concentration on the appearance and textures of decaying and overgrown bricks. The use of watercolour is unusual for Wright, most of whose drawings are executed in grey wash.
