Descendants of Pedro De Lousada

Notes

70. Rachel de Abraham Lousada

She appears to have been the daughter of Abraham d1722 (Abraham #45 died 1714).
Death from ref 98 #300 - 17Kislev Tisri 5468 = 11 Dec 1707

Diogo Lousada

There seems to have been a child Angelito died in 1708 (ref 98 #1083)
circumcised 6 Kislev 5459 = 9 Nov 1698 (BMR4 #253)

GIVEN NAMES: Also shown as Jacob and known as the NY chocolate merchant

Marriage Notes for Rachel de Abraham Lousada and Diogo Lousada

Marriage was ratified under Jewish rites at CreeChurch/Bevis Marks in 1698, doubtless reflecting an earlier civil union perhaps in Portugal

6 Kislev 5459 BMR2 = 9 Nov 1698

BMR2 #65 6 Kislev 5459

72. Moses Lousada

no evidence of London birth in BMR 4 & 5
2 Feb 1701 unsourced has been found
1700 from ref 324
ref 325 which shows wife Hannah and details of his estate
Hannah was accepting charity from Shearith Israel, New York by 1756 and remained a ward until 1774 (ref 325)
Moses traded in sugar, rum and spices (ref 325)
1750 death date from ref 328 vol4 p260

Hannah Myers

last wife of Moses alive on 7 Dec 1764, date of will of Aaron #53 and still accepting alms from Shearith Israel until 1774 ref 325

birth estimates from ref 333

120. Elkaley Esther Lousada

probable step-daughter
married Abraham I Abrahams ref 324 and 325
ref 324 gives her another name Elkaly. This same spelt Elkaley appears given to a daughter of Rachel Michael and Samuel Myers Cohen and may thus be a Michael or Myers family name.
ref 325 gives birthyear

Abraham Abrahams

of New York

121. Jacob Lousada

from AJHS 18 p93 etc

possible twin of Rachel but he did not survive long

122. Rachel Lousada

ref 324 shows she married Haim Myers and we estimate her birthdate from the marriage date - aged 13 at marriage noting her brother Jacob was born around 1743

Haim Myers

death estimate from donation data in ref 327 p16

Marriage Notes for Rachel Lousada and Haim Myers

from ref 324

125. Abigail Lousada

known from ref 324 but nothing for her in will of uncle Aaron #53
we suggest she eventually married her younger cousin David #542

74. Aaron Lousada

no evidence of London birth found in BMR 4&5
17 May 1695 unsourced has been found
ref 324 gives 1693/5 London (but no evidence for London)
his first daughter was Sarah and thus he appears to be a stepson of Rachel
his will according to ref 325 gave Benjamin #2609 50 pounds
where is a son Jacob? - perhaps died young

Blume Michael

she was alive at Aaron's death - see Aaron's will in ref 328

Marriage Notes for Aaron Lousada and Blume Michael

in 1740 will of father

the youngest child Jacob was bornin 1737 so the marriage was probably in 1736

126. Jacob Lousada

from ref 345

127. Sarah Lousada

known from ref 325

128. Elizabeth Lousada

from ancestry/RLA 1 Feb 23

in view of Catherine, who takes the maternal grandmother's name, Elizabeth may be an adopted step-daughter

possible sibling of Aaron #1226 (presumably with similar relationship with Aaron #53 and Blume)

129. Catherine Lousada

however ref 324 shows Catherine married Abraham Loxley 1779 and born about 1756

1821 death possibly relates to Catherine Pollack who married Isaac A Abrahams and also born 1756

Marriage Notes for Catherine Lousada and Abraham Loxley

from ref 324
place from Bob Leuzarder 12 Feb 2020
from Bob Leuzarder 8 Jan 2022
I am not sure when Catherine Louzada died, I
think it was in ~1779 based on information I found in the book, “The keeper of the king’s stores”.

“Captain Loxley, soon after the return of his father’s family to Philadelphia, was married to his faithful nurse, in fulfillment of their long-standing engagement.  But their happiness was of short duration, his health never fully established after the wounds received at the disastrous battle of the Brandywine, failed rapidly, and he sank into a decline, and finally into the grave, in less than four months after his marriage.  And his young wife was not left to mourn him long, for a few weeks saw her too carried to the silent house, appointed for all living.”

Based on this paragraph, it would appear that Catherine and Abraham were not married long enough to have had children together.

130. David Lousada

wife Abigail was administrix see ref 325 which gives date of birth c1760. This date makes it unlikely Abigail was his cousin. In any case, ref 325 gives details of his Somerset County Militia service in 1777.

131. Elias Baruch Louzada

a son Elias went to Tunis ref 171 and had a family there

77. Unknown Baruch Lousada

suggested great grand-daughter of Isaac Baruch Louzada #42

her name is probably reflected in the name of the oldest daughter of Simon Barrow which we are not certain of but may be Simha

Marriage Notes for Unknown Baruch Lousada and Baruch Pressburg

this marriage does not appear in ref 319 hence was elsewhere in Italy

134. Gedalia Baruch

the Prague brother - see SB1 will

Edgar Samuel informed me that in Sep 2012 Sephardi Bulletin the Honarary Archivist, Miriam Rodrigues Pereira wrote:
A legacy in trust
On 20 July 1803 Joseph Barrow made a request to the Mahamad. His father Simon Barrow of Barbados had left in his Will a legacy of £100 for the children or descendants of his brother in Prague whose name as far as he could (re)collect was Gedalia son of Baruh.
A diligent search had produced no information and Mr Barrow wished the Mahamad to invest the money in government securities in trust for whomsoever might be entitled to it. Meanwhile the interest could be applied to the Mahamad's general purpose fund and appropriated to charitable cases which "your congregation has so long had the merit of doing." The Mahamad acceeded to this request.

The descendants of Gedalia may have been stepsons see http://www.barrow-lousada.org/descendants_of_moritz_baruh_and.htm

135. Moritz Baruh

we learn of him from ref 31 of www.barrow-lousada.org and suggest he was a brother of Simon Barrow the first - essentially on the basis of their parallel claimed links with the Baruch Lousadas

on 1 Sep 2017 Peter Lousada emailed 'You may remember that I had seen a coat of arms in Budapest. I wrote at the time(1984) it was in the church of St. Matthias and consisted of the Crest - Dove – outspread wings and Shield – one dove and Chevron on azure ground and the name was GULIELMUS MAURITIUS JANESS DE MITIEZ. I had not received the De Dirsztay papers then and it must have rung bells even if it did not have any connection to Lousadas!  This may be the “lost” Moritz!

COMMENT: the Lousadas assumed their succession from the Duque de Losada in 1848 well after the death of Moritz Baruh whom we suggest was a brother of Simon Barrow 1709-1801. Therefore the above Moritz would have died after 1848 and therefore could not have been Moritz Baruh.

83. Jeremiah Baruch Lousada

birth and death from Shilstone - birth calculated

he witnessed 20 Dec 1738 deed of David Baruh Lousada - see ref 112 www.barrow-lousada.org

Rachel Hannah Baruh Lousada

placed in this marriage only because birthdate matches Daniel and  Emanuel

Sarah Gabay Letob

Shilstone 328

see notes for mother

140. Solomon Baruch Lousada

referred to in will of uncle David #1263

it is probably him named as a grandson in ref 294 as 'Sollomon Benoney Baruk Louzada'

despite this we suggest he could be a stepson of Sarah Gabay Letob and thus a product of Jeremiah's 1st marriage

perhaps went to New York for there is a 1795 record described as follows:

JULIAN LAND

Hi Julian,
I found a Solomon Luzado listed in on page 58 (below). I found him listed in “Return of Colections 1795” of the New York Congregation Shearith Israel in 1795.

141. Rachel Baruch Lousada

known from ref 294
distinguished from Rachel #1181 d1810

Esther Baruch Lousada

from ref 61 died 13 Tisri 5569 converted Chabad.org

known from her father's will

she was probably born before the 3 children looked after by the Lindos - these children were born 1746, 1750 and 1755

she died a Baruch Lousada but not a spinster so was probably married to her uncle Jeremiah as his last wife - she was probably a teenager when married off and born in the 1740-5 period

Marriage Notes for Jeremiah Baruch Lousada and Esther Baruch Lousada

this marriage is postulated

it would have occurred before 1778, the earliest entry in ref 132 of www.barrow-lousada.org, and after 1754 when Sarah the second wife died

142. Aaron Baruh Lousada

Shilstone no gravestone

143. Isaac Baruh Lousada

Shilstone Appendix 2 another record of burisls

no date but entered in registry between 24 May 1831 and 16 Jul 1832

84. Rachel Baruch Lousada

many people have said that Isaac Lamego married Rachel Lousada. Some sources have got it badly wrong though - it even being stated that he married Rachel 1262 the daughter of his daughter Abigail who married Jacob Baruh Lousada #36 which seems impossible. It is also impossible for him to have married his niece Rachel Baruh Lousada 129 the sister of Jacob Baruh Lousada #36 who was married to Rodrigues Lopes of Jamaica though widowed by 1752 but unmarried, and also impossible for him to have married Rachel 1201 who also married (Abraham) Rodrigues Lopes.

A possible source of this Rachel is that she was a daughter of David Baruh Lousada 612 - and the first daughter thus named after the paternal grandmother. Barbados will and administration records show her as Rebecca (Ribca) but this is considered to be a transcription error as we discuss on the Lamego page of www.barrow-lousada.org. However, David's will (ref 224) shows a probable daughter Rachel Aboab in Curacao. Hence is now seems that Isaac Lamego's last wife Rachel may have been the first daughter or Solomon #712, born after 1703 and early enough to have become the mother of Abigail #37 in 1723 and Haim in 1722. Her brother Jeremiah #1189 was born in 1704 so it seems probable that she was born after him, perhaps in 1706 at the latest, making her quite young to be a mother in 1722-3.

death from BMR6 17AD5511 in 1751 which is why she does not appear in the later wills of the London cousins of Solomon - see www.barrow-lousada.org discussion of the Barbados to Jamaica transition of the Baruch Lousadas.

Isaac Lamego

conceivably place of birth was not Jamaica. The threatened (but ultimately selective) expulsion of Jews from Southwest France in 1683 may have prompted a departure and then the expulsion of Jews from Guadeloupe and Martinique in 1683 or 1685 means that his father could have married in any of these places and Isaac born in Guadeloupe, Martinique or even Barbados. Indeed it is quite likely that his father was married in Barbados and moved to Jamaica much later but probably before 1703 for his future son-in-laws Emanuel 41 and Jacob 380 were still unmarried in Barbados in that year.

Isaac Lamego is often said to have married a Rachel Lousada, probably the 1st daughter of Solomon Baruch Lousada of Barbados as discussed here http://www.barrow-lousada.org/Lamego%20Lousada%20link.htm

1st appearance on Mahamad of Bevis Marks 1744 ref 5 p432

Incorrect death date from BMR6 11Se5527 Appendix C #1327 (wife #1328) aged 57 gives implied birthdate of 1710 which seems wrong as his daughter Abigail was born in 1723! Edgar Samuel by email 16 Oct 2013 informs us that Albert Hyamson's 'Dictionary of Anglo-Jewish Biography' in Anglo-Jewish Notabilities gives on p38 birth year 1685 ie age at death 82. We observe that it requires 2 transcription errors to get from 82 to 57 - both of which are plausible! Subsequently on 22 Oct 2013 Edgar Samuel found from inspection of an image in Bevis Marks Archives of the grave before the relocation to Brentwood that indeed there had been at least one transcription error - the first ie age at death was 80 plus and thus we take 82 as the correct date as per Hyamson.

In his will dated 16 Sep 1754 codicil 17 Dec 1761 Isaac Lamego refers to 2 siblings (ref NA 1263 synagoguescribes) Moses (who married a Lousada - daughter of Jacob #380) and Abraham - presumably the others Esther, Abigail and Rebecca predeceased him

Ephraim d'Aguilar

eccentric and miser; left vast sum hidden throughout dwelling to 2 daughters who survived him

endenized 2 Nov 1756 ref 42 #529

from http://www.twickenham-museum.org.uk/detail.asp?ContentID=420
we learn that Ephraim López Pereira d’Aguilar, 2nd Baron of the Holy Roman Empire, a Portuguese Sephardic Jew, came to Twickenham in 1772, leasing Gifford Lodge, next door to Abraham Prado, living in Twickenham Grange. He was connected by marriage with Prado whose wife Esther was a Salvador. d’Aguilar’s mother-in-law was a Salvador. At this time, another Salvador, Francis, was living along the Hampton Road in the property known as Twickenham Lodge. It may have been these connections that brought d’Aguilar to Twickenham.

Lysons' Environs of London. Vol VI Supplement, page 303....

One of the most remarkable persons buried in the Portuguese Jews' Cemetery at Mile End, London, is Ephraim Lopez Pereira - Baron d'Aguilar, 1739 - 1802, who appears by a brief inscription in English on his tomb. Died age 64 on 16th March 1802. Was the son Moses Pereira, Baron d'Aguilar. Distinguishing himself in the latter part of his life by an eccentricity bordering on insanity. After having lived in much splendour, in consequence of some losses, which still left him in affluence adopted the habits of a miser, secluded himself from society. He retained two houses, one I at Twickenham and one at Sydenham, which he kept shut, dividing his time between a house in Camden Row, Islington, where he usually spent the day and another in Shaftesbury Place, where he slept. His second wife, whom he treated most tyranically, put herself under protection of the law and was separated from him. His farm at Islington on the west bank of the New River, near the north end of Colebrook Row, because of his treatment of his cattle, went under the name of 'The Starvation Farmyard'. He died without making a will, and his daughters, one of  whom he cursed on his dying bed, who had married into very respectable families, inherited his property, including his plate and furniture which was stored in his splendid mansion in Bond Street and his house in Bethnal Green.
He left jewels worth £30,000, the total bulk of his property was said to have been worth upwards of £200,000.

On 8th April 1761, Leah d'Aguilar, sister of Baron d'Aguilar, married Raphael Franco, merchant of Fenchurch Street, and second son of Jacob Franco (who had married his niece Simba.
Raphael Franco's son Abraham and. his wife Esther, daughter of Mordecai Rodriguez Lopez, were the parents of Sir Ralph Lopes, who had received the name Lopes and the title after the death of his uncle Sir Manasseh Masseh Lopes, who died without issue. His daughter Esther had died age 24 on 1st July l8l9.

85. David Baruh Lousada

death from Shilstone

he had more than one child as implied by the 28 Nov 1786 will of his cousin Sarah #384 while the will of his cousin and her sister Leah (probate 4 Jan 1765 died 28 Nov 1764) shows only the oldest surviving child Rebecca 1746-1807 (but from the dates Leah ought to have known of Rachel 1750-1810 and Ephraim 1755-80 as well). From the 1780 will of Isaac Lindo on www.barrow-lousada.org we can see other surviving children were Ephraim and Rachel. And an Abraham Baruh Lousada makes an appearance in ref 131 Chapter 11 p210 as a freemason apparently around the 1797-1829 period. We have little basis upon which to place him but perhaps he was the right age to have been another child of this marriage.

Sarah Unknown

Shilstone 313

from the 1774 will of Isaac Lindo (on www.barrow-lousada.org) we see that children of David were nieces and nephews of Isaac Lindo - Rebecca (niece), Ephraim (nephew) and Rachel (niece) all getting bequests - 100 pounds, 100 pounds and 25 pounds respectively. Also, from the context it seems probable that the 3 beneficiaries were siblings.

The will of Simon Massiah (extract on www.barrow-lousada.org) shows he had a Baruch Lousada nephew (first name not shown. But he had no survivin sister Judith.

On www.barrow-lousada.org we make the only viable hypothesis is that Judith Lindo and Sarah Baruch Lousada were sisters and that they were not Massiahs. Perhaps they were Lindos.

148. Jael Leah Baruh Lousada

Shilstone 314

150. Solomon Baruch Lousada

10 Tamus 5506 shilstone App I

a Solomon is referred to in will of David #1263 as a nephew but death 1746 appears odd - surely his uncle would not refer to someone dead for over 10 years? hence this solomon is placed with Aaron #714 as a child who died young

151. Rebecca Baruh Lousada

David had a daughter Rebecca according to Leah's will 1765 and 'children' according to Sarah's will 1786

Shilstone no gravestone but died 14 Tisri 5568 as Miss Rebecca Baruch Louzado ie a spinster

153. Luna Hannah Baruch Lousada

birth date inferred from age at death of 4 from ref 100 of www.barrow-lousada.org

from Alan Pereira 7 Feb 2017
in ref 100 can be found Grave stone of Luna Hannah Baruch Lousada daughter of David & Sarah born 29 Kislev 5512 = 17 Dec 1751 died aged 4y 8m = died 17 Aug 1756

Alan suggests leaving death date approximate as age at death seems an approximation

155. Sarah Massiah

appears in 1775 will of Simon Massiah as a spinster

probable wife of joseph Barrow #238 who had Isaac de Peza Massiah as a ''brother''

88. Rachel Lamego Lousada

She must have died before the date of the will of Aaron Lamego #128 with probate 1747. She was first-born daughter having her paternal grandmother's name and was probably born around 1710 not long after Jacob #380 got to Jamaica. She died after 14 Apr 1743 when her husband's will was validated after being first made in 1 May 1741.

She should be distinguished from Rachel #129 sister of Jacob Lousada #36 who also married a Rodrigues Lopes but was still alive but widowed in 1752 the probate date of Jacob Lousada's will - in fact Rachel #129 died in 1754

birth before 1714 according to Alan Pereira data http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=alan%5Fpereira&id=I18805

DEATH: Also shown as Died 1743/1747

Abraham Rodriguez Lopez

his name was Abraham which is the name of the first grandson - confirmed by the next known grandson being named Menasseh after his maternal grandfather

he probably was not:
the Abm Rodriques Lopez on http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jamwgw/el.htm who died around 1741-2 and who we attribute as the husband of Rachel #129;
nor
the Abraham Rodrigues on http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jamwgw/mr.htm#R who died around 1733-4 for this person does not appear to have the Lopes surname and perhaps died too early to have married this Rachel who was born around 1710

he may be the Abraham Rodrigues Lopes (who was Hazan)in Jamaica whose (second) wife was Esther d1773 in ref 81 www.barrow-lousada.org and is further described in Alan Pereira's notes from:

"American Vital Records from the Gentleman's Magazine 1731 - 1868", compiled by David Dobson (Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1987), has an entry for "Lopez, Abraham Rodrigues, Jewish merchant, d. Moses Lamego

he may be the 'Jew merchant' who died at Hackney 21 Nov 1759
from ancestry.com - England - Extracted Parish and Court Records
Musgrave's Obituaries

Edgar Samuel email 13 Sep 2013 Bank of England data shows father was a stockholder in 1714 but ref 45 p69 informs us that he had travelled to London before 1722 from Jamaica. He married the daughter of Diego Gonzalez and brother of Abraham Gonzalez of Jamaica (before he arrived in London by 1722) but it is not known where this wife died - no record in ref 88 or 98

an infant died 3 Adar 5484 #1378 ref 98 and his will directs he be buried next to son Aaron at Mile End who is no doubt a product of the first marriage

his will suggests no surviving children other than Abigail

refused office at Bevis Marks on the 5 occasions he was elected in 5491, 5495, 5500, 5515 and  5519 (ref 5)

left Jamaica in a hurry ref 45 for being under suspicion of illegally trading with Dutch and French vessels

Marriage Notes for Esther Baruh Lousada and Moses Lamego

MARRIAGE: Possible marriage
25 Jan 1736 London, Middlesex, England
Moseh Lamego [MZY8-RFM] to Ester Baruch Louzada[MZY8-R5V]

159. Abigail Lamego

she was less than 30 as shown by her father's 1756 will ie she was born after 1726 but she must have been born after Rachel who died in 1736

in his codicil of 19 Sep 1759 descibes Abigail as an infant so less than 30 at the oldest

Moses Isaac Levi

His identity is not known with certainty.

In ref 6 a man of this name appears on the Mahamad of Bevis Marks in the Jewish years 5523 when he was Gabay (treasurer), 5528, 5532, 5537, 5542, 5546, 5550, 5554, 5559, and 5563. His will was proved in 1808 - ref 91 gives this date.

Ref 65 p30 describes a Moses Isaac Levy in the context of his Copse Hill house at Wimbledon. He had been an army contractor at Munster, but holding positions at Bevis Marks suggests he was Sephardic. Possibly this description applies to someone else.

The man of the same name in Barbados later of Smithfield is shown in Barrow wills. Sarah Barrow's will gives his children Kitty Nancy Maria Dinah Simah and Samuel. He appears to be a relative by marriage of Judith Joseph Levi #454 see http://www.barrow-lousada.org/isaac_levi_working_notes.htm

92. Aaron Lousada

Death from ref 88 www.barrow-lousada.org is given as 7 Mar or May 1768 buried Hunts Bay. (Ref 81 of www.barrow-lousada.org shows wife of Aaron as Grace 1718-23 Oct 1737 but this is Aaron Hezekiah Haim Baruh Lousada #1174.

He was a Kingston merchant - who willed his wife Rachel 4000 pounds and 6 of his black house servants on the condition that she remain a widow (ref 89 of www.barrow-lousada.org). He owned 140 acres in St John Parish 1754 ref 45 p219.

Aaron #125 rates no mention in the will of his probable cousin Aaron Lousada #1174 d1768 and neither does he appear in the will of Aaron Lamego. However, there seems to be clear evidence that he was the son of Esther Lamego in the will of Esther Lamego #386 which is on www.barrow-lousada.org - perhaps there were other reasons for this omission eg that he was amply provided for elsewhere and perhaps when he came of age in 1727 he was given the family business in Jamaica when Aaron Lamego and his sons Isaac and Moses went to London.

Simon Greenfield pointed out that in the will of Daniel Mendes da Costa there is a bequest to his son-in-law suggesting Aaron was alive then as does another bequest in the 1764 will of his brother-in-law Isaac Mendes da Costa. This is consistent with the 1768 date given in ref 88 and 89 above.
