452. Frederick Vernon Cowper Pereira

DEATH: Name: Frederick V C Pereira Death Registration Month/Year: 1966 Age at death (estimated): 75 Registration district: Bury St Edmunds Inferred County: Suffolk Volume: 4b Page: 946

Frederick Vernon Cowper Pereira was one of a list of Gentleman Cadets at the Royal Military College to be 2nd Lieutenant with the Suffolk Regiment in March 1912. He was in Northern Ireland in 1914 and the regiment left Dublin for France in two boats one day apart. They reassembled at Le Havre and made their way by train to Le Cateau on 17th August. The 2nd Battalion, almost one thousand men, detrained and marched to Landrecies eight miles away and joined the B.E.F. On 21st and 22nd the 2nd Battalion billited at St Waast. Here the records are vague because regimental documents were destroyed during World War ll. The Suffolk Regiment Museum have said that 2nd Lieut. Pereira was taken prisoner at the Battle of Le Cateau after being slightly wounded on 26th August. It does not say if the Suffolk Regiment was present at the Battle of Mons and then fell back to make a stand at Le Cateau. 2nd Lieut. Pereira was held at a Prisoner of War Camp at Halle which was closed in 1917 and his name appears at Furstenburg another camp about fifty miles
north of Berlin. The Straits Times said that F.V.C. Pereira was transferred from Germany to Holland on 27th February 1918.
