295. Richard Henry Whittington
Richard Henry WHITTINGTON was born on 26 Sep 1885 in Riverside, Santa Rosa Indian Reservation, California died on 8 Jan 1947 in Family Home In Honuapu, Kau, Island Of Hawaii at
age 61, and was buried in Family Plot, Honuapo, Kau, Hawaii. The cause of his death was Probably heart attack.According to his gravestone Richard was born in 1885. According to Jeri Lu Heen's entry in the IGI, he was born on September 26, 1885 Riverside, in the Santa Rosa Indian Reservation in
California. In 1900, Richard and his siblings Addie, Dorothy, Joyce, and Sterling were living with their grandmother Herminie "Botley" in San Rafael, CA. He was 14 at the time and was born in California.
Richard's report card from the Hitchcock School in San Rafael, California, dated May 25, 1901, states that his conduct is excellent, but that his "work is erratic, nervous, does not learn easily." Richard was 15 years old. According to Arthur Boxley Whittington, the Hitchcock School is/was a military academy.
He came to the Islands in 1903. After living on Kauai for a short time, he settled on the Big Island.
On August 3, 1909 in a letter to Ellen Whittington, Annie Pont wrote, "How are Bob and Dick getting on?"
He married Kaleiluluu Elaine Waiau on Dec. 19, 1909 in Kau.
When he was 24, in 1910, he was living with his wife and mother-in-law in Honuapo, "near the landing,"
in Kau on the island of Hawaii. His mother-in-law owned the farm free and clear, and they lived with his
wife's 13 year old brother, Kihano Kamohealu, and a Korean servant. Richard worked as some sort of
helper or assistant on a sugar plantation.
In a letter to William, Ellen and Addie Whittington written about June, 1906, Arthur wrote, "You speak of
Dick being a 'Luna.'"
His oldest child, William Richard George, was born in Honolulu in 1911. His next child, Ellen Herminie,
was born on Kauai in 1912. The third child, Elizabeth Beatrice Kaleiluluu, was born in Honuapo on the
Big Island in 1914, and the fourth, Margaret Louise Leinaala, on Kauai in 1915. The rest were born on
the Big Island.
In 1913 he became godparents to his own 2 oldest children, William Richard and Ellen Herminie on
Kauai. On the same handwritten document concerning this event, his birthday is listed as September
26, 1885.
On 14 April 1914 Richard wrote his parents that "as soon as the next youngster comes along, I will
come back and most likely bring Kalei and the kids, and then we can build a little house up there so that
we can stay." He gave his parents some advice on fencing and on not buying a truck and instead taking
the seats out of the auto. "We expect the next addition some time this week, and then we ought to be
able to come at the end of this month some time. I will try and raise $1000 in Honolulu on my way up
there, and maybe more if I can."
In 1920 Census he was living on Kamaoa Road in Waiohinu on the Big Island with his wife and 6
children (Vol 1, ED 106, Sheet 2, Line 17).
On April 26, 1926 he was appointed road overseer and served continuously until his death.
On May 7, 1926 in a letter to his mother, Annie Pont wrote, "The papers last week told of a tremendous
eruption of the volcano at Hawaii. For the moment I cannot remember its name and am too lazy to go
and look in the Atlas. It described how tremendous streams of lava had destroyed some villages and
gone into the sea, making it boil up. I hope that has not affected you at Kuai [sic]. Honolulu, as far as we
know, does not seem to have suffered, so I imagine all the family are safe. Has Dick got any land near
the volcano?"
On October 30, 1928 his father wrote Addie that he "had a letter from Dick yesterday. He was surprised
to hear that we 3 had come to town. He says he will be able to see more of us here than he did when on
Kauai."
On September 30, 1943 in a letter to Addie, Beatrice Whittington expressed surprise at what Addie had
said in a previous letter. "You mentioned your brother Dick in the former letter. That surprised me as I
had only known of Bob!"
On March 1, 1945 he wrote a note to his sister Addie in which he said he had a cold, his daughter and
Addie's namesake Add was in Bakersfield, California and enjoying it very much, that he had to go to Hilo
the following day, "a place I don't care much about, such a one horse town," and that he hadn't seen
David [Greig?] yet, but expected to one of these days.
On April 2, 1946, the day after the tsunami that devastated Hilo, he wrote Addie, "Well, we are still in the
land of the living. One darn thing after another. Standard Oil Co. at Houapo is a complete wreck.
Punaluhe, a small village about 3 miles from us, is in a mess. The water is breaking right in the
people's front yards. Several houses wrecked but no one hurt. Hilo got the worst of it. 100 more deaths
up to eight o'clock last night, but they estimate about 350, maybe more. I have a gang of men at Punalulu
cleaning up the road which is completely covered with sand and rocks."
On December 2, 1946 he wrote Addie: "Nothing much new down this way. Had a good rain last night
which we needed very badly. Went fishing yesterday and got nothing except a chance to relax. We still
have the Bowman family here, and they are becoming quite a problem. Hope this finds you all in good
health."
On December 23, 1946 he wrote Addie that they were having a lot of rain and he was worried about
floods. "Have to be on my toes all the time. Want to spend Xmas at the volcano but might not be able to
make it. Arthur was supposed to come home on Saturday but is still in Honolulu as the planes were all
grounded, but coming today I hope." He also enclosed a check for $45, which included his monthly
remittance and an "extra ten for you and Joyce."
Richard was in good health and shortly after dinner was discovered on a couch by Kalei when she went
over to call him. Richard and Kalei had 8 children, seven of whom were alive at his death in 1947. He
was cremated at Elmore's Funeral Parlor.
On August 7, 1996, Tom, Linda and Samantha Powers drove down to see Whittington Beach Park in
Honuapo. It is pretty with a small pond that feeds into the ocean, an old wharf that is now nothing but
concrete supports, and a rocky shore, no beach. We visited the town of Honuapo, which consists of a
small gift shop billed as the "Southernmost Flea Market in the US," and spoke with the owner, J.D. He
told us that the park was named after Dick Whittington after his death because he was so well-liked and
respected in the community. He explained that in the old days there had been a sugar mill at Honuapo
located on the concrete pads we had seen at the park that looked like helicopter landing pads.
Redwood flumes had brought the sugar down the hills to the mill. He explained that the Whittingtons still
owned a large piece of property in the area and told us to visit Tom, the tenant at the Whittington place,
and he would let us photograph the family plot. We did. The house was one of two remaining houses
that the Whittington family now rent out. It is down a dirt driveway from the highway. The house was the
Whittington's house, a fairly large plantation-style home. A large yard is off the side of the house. Below
appears to be a pretty steep slope with rattoon cane leading down to the ocean. Between the house and
the curving driveway going up to the highway is the tenant's wood shop. Next to that in a small area is
the family plot, with 5 concrete encased graves, all joined into one large slab, each marked by what
looks to be a bronze plaque. The plaques name Dick, his wife Kalei, their daughter Claire, and Kalei's
parents.
Richard's gravemarker states, "Richard Henry Whittington, 1885 - 1947."
In a letter to Linda Powers received January 7, 1997, Maggie Whittington Carmichael wrote, "My father
felt as though he was the black sheep of the family since he married a part Hawaiian. The only aunty that
was good to us was your grandmother, Aunt Minnie." She enclosed a picture of herself and her two
younger brothers, Bob and Arthur, taken on Thanksgiving Day, 1996 at Bob's son Randy's home in Mt.
View, California.
In her Christmas letter of 1998, Maggie Carmichael wrote, "My father always told us to be proud of
whomever we are with all of the bloods that we have."

A Remembrance (from Starbulletin.com, Sept. 9, 2001, and Imua, KSBE, April 2004)
After retiring from Kamehameha Schools in 1974, Bowman was instrumental in the resurgence of interest in canoe building and voyaging. As a consultant to KS's extension education services, he shared his canoe building expertise with many individuals and community organizations. He was a consultant in the building of the voyaging canoe Hokule'a, giving advice and crafting crucial parts that no one else knew how to make.
Wright, Sr. passed away on Dec. 30, 2003 at the age of 96. He was a Kamehameha Schools 1928 graduate and former industrial arts teacher.
Bowman's association with KS began in 1914 when he enrolled in the Kamehameha Schools for Boys where he excelled in woodshop. Then school President Frank Midkiff persuaded Bowman's father to allow Wright to continue his education at General Electric Vocational School in Lynn, Massachusetts.
Although he was trained as a machinery pattern maker in the General Electric apprentice program, Bowman was fascinated by canoe carvers when he was growing up on the Big Island and eventually took up wood working on his own during the Depression.
On his return to Hawai'i, Bowman started his own furniture shop, but was lured back to Kamehameha to teach by President Harold Kent in 1950.
KS students fortunate enough to have been in one of Bowman's industrial arts classes between 1950 and 1973 invariably remember how much they enjoyed learning how to use saws, chisels, vices, sanders and varnish to make wooden bowls, pig-shaped chopping blocks, salad forks, spoons and poi pounders.
They also remember Bowman's patient encouragement, helpfulness, praise and humor.
Over the years, Bowman earned the reputation as a master artisan in woodworking \endash crafting exquisite koa cabinets, bowls, tables and o'o (digging sticks) \endash many of them made specifically for Kamehameha Schools.
His contributions to KS and the wider community were recognized by the institution in 1974, when he was honored with the Order of Ke Ali'i Pauahi medal, the institution's highest honor.
Ka'ili Chun, who became an apprentice to Wright, Sr., says, "He has so much knowledge, not just about making rocking chairs and canoes, but he has seen Hawaii as it used to be. To learn from Mr. Bowman is learning from a Hawaiian about Hawaii in a Hawaiian way."

http://archives.starbulletin.com/2006/08/23/news/obits.htmlborn on 11 Dec 1915 in Makaweli, Kauai.
Another name for Margaret is Maggie. In a list of the Whittington Family about 1930, whose author is unknown but which appears to be part of a letter sent to Addie Whittington, Maggie's birthday is given as 11 Dec 1915 in Makaweli, Kauai.
In his Christmas letter of December, 2000, Arthur Whittington stated that they had celebrated Maggie's 85th birthday on December 10th.
She is not mentioned in her father's obituary of 1947. In 1957 she was a teacher at Piihonua School.
According to her niece Mary Lei Whittington Paris, Margaret's Hawaiian middle name consists of the second half of her mother's full Hawaiian name.
Currently lives at 1504 Wailuku Drive, Hilo, HI 96720, and she is the landlady for the family's two rental properties in Honuapo, one of which was the family home.
We met her at the Hilo Yacht Club while having dinner with Peggy and Mark Jaeger. It was a brief conversation as she was leaving. However, she was very pleased to learn that I was Shrimp's daughter, and she said he was her favorite cousin. She said she had attended the funeral for Margie Greig and that it was so very sad because she was such a sweet child. She recalled spending at least one happy summer with her Aunt Minnie Greig and her cousins. She said Aunt Minnie was her favorite aunt and that she was wonderful. She said that David and Skinny has spent a summer with her family in Honuapo when they were all children. When asked about her Aunt Nell, she said she had nothing nice to say about that woman, and that the Hansen's always had looked down upon their family for being part Hawaiian. She said Nell had considered her father Dick a "black sheep" for marrying a Hawaiian. With regard to the Homestead in Kalaheo, Maggie informed me that Hans Hansen pretty much stole it, and that her mother Kalei had loaned Willie and Ellen the money to build their house there. The implication was that her parents were never repaid any of the money.
We got a nice Christmas note from Maggie in 1998. "At my age (83) my arthritis is kind of getting me down but I'm still driving." She wrote that her daughter Sidney's daughter was staying "with me and attending our community college."

Pereira visited 13 Elthorne Road (in Archway) · and nearby 582 Holloway Road 13.2.1992. The area is still under Islington District Council.
13 is a ?Victorian fairly ornate ?4-storey ?tenement/workhouse, now used as factory/warehouse/offices. Opposite are narrow terraced cottages with tiny front gardens. M&A. thought these buildings were as known by Rose. Perhaps Rose lived in a room in 13. 3.92 Beat Pereira advised that Rose lived with her cousin as her father died when she was 16 so possibly here.
582 Holloway Road is now the Royal Northern Hospital. A sign proclaims "The Islington War Memorial is the Casualty Department of this Hospital in Manor Gardens and was erected after the Great War 1914-18 by public subscription." 582 was between Manor Gardens and Tollington Way with the "Cock Tavern" on the corner with Tollington Way and "The Half Moon" public house opposite 582. All side streets have beautiful ?Georgian terraced houses and above the shop fronts of Holloway Road the terraced buildings are ornate but the area has been left to run down as the poor live here now.In the scrapbook there is a Family Group Picture of Horace & Rose's Golden Wedding

Cemetery: GORRE BRITISH AND INDIAN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France
Grave Reference/ I. C. 17.
Panel Number:
Location: Gorre is a hamlet 2.5 kilometres east of Beuvry. Leave Beuvry on the D72, crossing the railway and then the Canal d'Aire on the way. The Cemetery is 150 metres from the church in Gorre, to the left of the D72.Historical Information:
«tab»The Chateau was occupied early in the War by British and Indian troops; and the Cemeteries, in the South-East corner of the Chateau grounds, were begun in the autumn of 1914. The Indian Cemetery was closed in October, «tab»1915, with the transfer of the Indian Corps to the East. The British Cemetery was used by units holding the sector until April, 1918, when, in «tab»the Battles of the Lys, Gorre became a support post close behind the front «tab»line. The ground was never taken by the enemy. The 55th (West Lancashire) Division, which held this front before and during the German attack, buried many of their dead in Plots V and VI. There are now over 900 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, in the British section, nearly 20 are unidentified and four, destroyed by shell fire, are represented by special memorials. Twenty-six were brought in after the Armistice from isolated positions East and North-East of Gorre. In the Indian section, nearly 20 are unidentified. Ten were reburied in the cemetery after the Armistice, from Mesplaux Farm, near Locon, and four from other places. The cemetery covers an area of 6,334 square metres and is partly enclosed by a low rubble wall.In Memory of

He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom.
Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten.

Dear Madam
«tab»I very much regret to inform you that your son was dangerously wounded and died before reaching the First Aid Post. He was hit by a machine gun about 11.20 p.m. on the 5th June.
«tab»He was a particularly bright, brave boy, always willing to do more than his share of the work.
«tab»He was conscious when out on the stretcher and said, "Oh I'am all right".
«tab»The bullet shattered his thigh but I feel certain that he suffered no pain. I am awfully sorry to lose him. He was one of the best bombers I had in my Company and his willingness at all times to take a hand in all things and on all occasions, made him invaluable.
«tab»I hope you will realise (when you think how hard it is to lose him) that he did his very best always.
«tab»I remain Yours truly

If the GJP born 1869 is the one married in 1890 & 1913 (the second birth would be too young for the second marriage), then a scenario is that GJP married twice and had GJP born 1902 from the first marriage.
This would also make GJP the son of Thomas William Pereira & Sarah HullMarriages Jun 1913
