"Kandahar to Kabul and Back" by Peter T.Pereira
William Simpson Pereira enlisted with the 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade at Westminster on 20th August 1870 and was sent to Shorncliffe as Private 1841 William Pereira. From Shorncliffe he went to Chatham and Dublin and on to Umbala in India in November 1873.  He stayed at Umbala until 31st October 1876 and was transferred to the 60th Rifle Regiment as Private 1358. From 1876 he was stationed at Rawalpindi, Pategarh and Meerut until 1879.  With the 2nd/60th Rifles he was sent to Kandahar in Afghanistan. A large force left Kandahar in March 1880 on route for Kabul.  Before reaching Kabul the column was attacked at Ahmed Khel by thousands of Afghan tribesmen who inflicted heavy losses on the British and Indian troops.  The column eventually reached Kabul where the 2nd/60th Rifles stayed until four months later on the 8th August 1880 the battalion left Kabul with three Brigades under General Roberts, marched back to relieve Kandahar which was then under siege.  A full-scale battle took place around the city which marked the end of the Second Afghan War.  William Pereira was sent back to India and on to Natal in South Africa until June 1881.  He had been promoted to Corporal in Natal on 15th May 1881. He returned to England and on to Winchester in 1882. He was Discharged on the 25th August 1882 after 12 years service.

Marriage Notes for Phoebe Simpson Pereira and Thomas Alfred Jackson

MARRIAGE: Peter T. Pereira's April 2001 letter
"Phoebe Pereira married Thomas Alfred Jackson, Bachelor age 24(=b.1852), son of Alfred Jackson, at the Free Christian Church in the District of Pancras, by Certificate.  The address of Thomas was 21 Harmood Street and Phoebe was at 21 St.Leonards Square.  The witnesses were J.Pereira and Thomas Pereira".

NOTE Phoebe's younger sister, Jane b.1858/9 married here on 16.5.1880.  Presumably she was the witness with their brother, Thomas Wm. b.7.12.1839.  Harmood Street and St.Leonards Sq. are close to Kentish Town W. Underground Station in "London A-Z" 1993.
On 16 May 1880, Phoebe's sister Jane was married and shown as living at 21 Harmood Street at the time.  Did Phoebe's husband, Thomas Alfred Jackson, on moving out of 21 Harmood Street, make way for Jane, who would have been aged 16 at that time?

Phoebe Pereira age 23 of 21 St Leonards Square, the daughter of William Pereira, Shoemaker, married by Certificate, Thomas Alfred Jackson, Labourer age 24 of 21 Harmood Street, the son of Alfred Jackson, Labourer, at the Free Christian Church, District of Pancras, on the 9th July 1876. Witnesses- J.Pereira and Thomas Pereira

Proofs that this is correct are
1) Occupation of Brewer's Drayman for Thomas
2) Daughter Minnie which ties in with Winnie in 1891 Census
3) Nellie is a nickname of Phoebe
4) All born in St.Pancras

Note: Birth is one day later than shown on birth certificate.

Notes from a letter of Peter Thomas Pereira dated 1st January 2004...
Birth details of William the son of Phoebe Simpson Pereira:
I have enclosed what I consider to be the birth certificate of William and a copy of the respective sheet of the IGI which also show the baptism of William the son of Phoebe.  At the time I thought I was close enough believing that there had been a mistake at the Registras Office together with the fact that Phoebe could not read or write.  I also thought it odd that Phoebe was still at the Workhouse nearly a fortnight (2 weeks) later.  She was actually discharged on 26th April 1870.  I vaguely remeber that the baptism entry was misworded but never rechecked it beacuse the Workhouse records themselves are confusing.
I've also enclosed a copy of the birth certificate of Phoebe the daughter of Ellen Pereira.

A possible marriage...
Office of Population, Censuses & Surveys, London, WC2 Marriages
Jan-Mar 1895: Pereira Henry James (Augustine) Shoreditch Vol.1c Page 99 to Martha Fanny Singer
Note: The problem with the above is that no wife is mentioned at his death in 1895 and in 1891 he is described as an Imbecile, so would be unlikely to have attracted a wife.  Not proven and unlikely!

Informant of Henry's death was Edmund Rolfe who indicated he was Henry's Brother-in-Law.  As Henry did not appear to marry, he must have had a sister, who in turn married a Rolfe (possibly Edmund).  Edmund's wife is Bertha.  There is a Bertha Nettie Pereira who married in West Ham 1895.

My family has a copy of his marriage certificate, of that year, on which his wife's name is given as Sarah Ann EDMONDS.  We have also recently purchased a copy of what we believe to be her birth certificate, which confirms your approximated date of 1848.  The details are as follows:

Mother given as Sarah Ann (nee Bulmer) and father as Thomas William Edmonds.  Birth notified by mother 9.5.1848.

The below 1881 Census has a problem in that Henrietta is born in Bethnal Green and she would have been aged 14 when married on the 8th March, 1856.  Given that all children have been born in Bethnal Green, it is quite likely that this is the correct family.

Is the above correct as Henrietta died in 1894?  Trade is also wrong!
No other matching records in 1901 or 1911 Census.  Did George also die before the 1901 Census?

In a letter from Peter Thomas Pereira (received by AD&MA Pereira 5 May, 2004), Peter indicates that he thinks Jesse's marriage to Caroline took place in the fourth quarter of 1862 in Bethnal Green.  Could Caroline's maiden name be Foster (based on surname of niece in 1881 Census above)?
