BURIAL: Charlotte Buckingham tababt 1809 tab25 Oct 1834 tabSt Pancras tabCamden
see Genealogy\\pereira\\Images\\BuckinghamCharlotteBur18341025.jpg

was born 28 May 1799 was christened 22 Jun 1799 in St. Marylebone, Middlesex, Eng and died 18 Oct 1834 in Regent Place West, London, England at age 35.

Notes from email of Linda Powers dated 26th nov 2003:-
In the IGI there is a record for "Charlotte Elizth. Albert, daughter of John Willm. Albert and his wife Sarah, christened 22 Jun 1799 at St. Maryleborne, Saint Mary-st. Marylbone Roads, London, England."

In the IGI there is a record for the marriage of Charlotte Elizabeth Albert to John George Green on 15 Jun 1818 at Westminster, Saint James, London, England.

The original christening date of 1811 would make Charlotte only aged 7 at her wedding.  However, the 1811 christening is identical with sister Maria Rebecca Charlotte Albert and Manasseh Lopez Pereira (Mother's brother)

In an email dated 31 Oct 2001, Katharine Williams wrote, "Charlotte Elizabeth ALBERT married twice: firstly to John George GREEN (son of William Crompton and Ann Elizabeth GREEN), and secondly to my ancestor, James Alexander Silk BUCKINGHAM of H.M. Customs.  I have not located the second Marriage.  However, Charlotte Elizabeth died in October 1834 in London, leaving at least one child by her first marriage and a son Robert Silk BUCKINGHAM (born circa 1832, died 1853 in Jamaica, West Indies).

She continued: "My reference to Charlotte Elizabeth's Death comes from a man conducting a BUCKINGHAM one-name study, as follows:-
Maydsley, page 258, "communicated by DeBernardy Brothers, Next-of-Kin Gazette and Parish Clerks Register.  Died October 1834 at Regent Place West, Charlotte Elizabeth, wife of James Silk Buckingham, Esq., and daughter of William John Albert, Esq., Late of H. M. Customs". Letters of Administration, PCC
Middlesex, December 1834.

She is named in Sir Menasseh Masseh Lopes's will as daughter of Sarah Albert and is referred to as "Charlotte Elizabeth Green."

In Dame Charlotte Lopes's will of 1831 she left £100 to each of Sarah Albert's daughters.

In an email dated 31 Oct 2001, Katharine Williams wrote, "What I did find about Charlotte Elizabeth ALBERT was on a microfilm I brought in to the local Latter Day Saints Church (microfilm #1042319 - Marriages at St. James Picadilly, Westminster, London, England, 1803-1863). This was a Church of England. I was checking the 1831 marriage of the sister of my ancestor, James Alexander Silk BUCKINGHAM, at that church, and found this interesting & very unusual Marriage entry:
"John George GREEN a minor & Charlotte Elizabeth GREEN a minor, both of this parish (formerly Charlotte Elizabeth ALBERT), they having been already married to each other at Gretna Green according to the Rites and ceremonies of the Church of Scotland, by & with the consent of Ann Elizabeth GREEN, widow, the Sole Guardian appointed in & by the Will of William Crompton GREEN, deceased, Whilst living the Natural & Lawful Father of the said John George GREEN (unreadable) by (unreadable) with the consent of William John ALBERT Esq., the Natural & Lawful Father of the said Charlotte Elizabeth GREEN in order to obviate any doubts that may arise touching and concerning the validity of the aforesaid Marriage already had Solemnized between them. This Marriage was again Solemnized by Licence this Fifteenth day of June in the year 1818 - by me Edward MEDLEY clerk in orders.
This marriage was again solenmized between us.....(signed) John George GREEN, & Charlotte Elizabeth GREEN (formerly ALBERT)."
WITNESSES: W. J. ALBERT, William COLE, (unreadable) GRANT, Esther (FRANCIS?).
It would appear that Charlotte and John eloped, as minors, to Gretna Green, Scotland, and were married there. However, I can find no record of the marriage. It is understandable that the parents thought the first marriage illegal, hence a second and "proper" ceremony. I don't know when John George GREEN died. Charlotte Elizabeth's second marriage to James Alexander Silk BUCKINGHAM but it may have been about 1832. James was aged 19 in 1832 and Charlotte aged 32-33 - quite a difference in age!

Charlotte died in 1834 in England and James was transferred to Savana-la-Mar,Westmoreland, Jamaica, with the Customs Service the following year. I think that the Robert Silk BUCKINGHAM who died at Westmoreland, Jamaica, in 1853, aged 21, would have been a child of Charlotte Elizabeth & James BUCKINGHAM, but have no proof until I locate his birth in England.

In a letter to Alan and Margaret Pereira dated 30 March 2003, Peter Pereira wrote, "Maria Rebecca Charlotte Albert married James Alexander Silk possibly Silk-Buckingham at St. George, Bloomsbury, 5 March 1835. I wrote to H.M. Customs and Excise in London asking for any information or details of his of his service with the department. I had three letters in reply from different branches who were unable to help, but at least I had replies."

In an email dated 12 April 2003, Katherine Williams wrote, "From S. Dennis Buckingham of Marratxi, Mallorca, Spain (23 Feb. 2000); Next of Kin and Parish Clerks Register:
Died 18th October 1834 at Regent Place West, Charlotte Elizabeth, wife of James Silk Buckingham Esq., and daughter of William John Albert, Esq, late of H.M. Customs. (Dennis conducts a Buckingham one-name study for England. He was under the impression that Charlotte was a second wife of James Silk Buckingham, the father of James Alexander Silk B., until I requested a record searcher to locate a Will for Charlotte Elizabeth, and received the following Admon.)
PCC Administration, Dec. 1834:
On the eighteenth day, Admon of the Goods, Chattels and Credits of Charlotte Elizabeth Buckingham, late of Regent Place West in the Parish of Saint Pancras in the County of Middlesex, deceased, was granted to James Alexander Silk Buckingham, the lawful husband of the said Deceased having been first sworn duly to Administer. 600 Pounds. Date: December 1834.
She went on, "With regard to the closest parish church to Regent Place West if one was looking for Charlotte's burial and gravestone, Dennis Buckingham advised, "Although Westminster was incorporated into St. Pancras I still feel we should be looking near Marylebone Road rather than Regents Street. By coincidence, I know the area fairly well having been born in St. Johns Avenue, Hampstead.....the Regent Place West has a Regents Park ring to it. " I have checked my Greater London A - Z map, and located Regent Place, W1, running off Regent Street. It is difficult to see, being such a short street!"

She was baptized 2 Jan 1811 in St. Pancras Old Church, Pancras Road, Middlesex.

Charlotte married John George GREEN son of William Crompton GREEN and Ann Elizabeth, 15 Jun 1818 in Saint James, Westminster, London, England.

Charlotte next married James Alexander Silk BUCKINGHAM son of James Silk BUCKINGHAM and Elizabeth JENNINGS, <5 Mar 1835> in St. George, Bloomsbury.
James was born 29 Jun 1813 and was christened 1817 in Mylor, Cornwall, England.

Noted events in his life were:
He worked as a Collector of Customs.
The child from this marriage was:
Robert Silk BUCKINGHAM was born about 1832 died 1853 in Jamaica, West Indies about age 21, and was buried 25 Oct 1853 in Logwoods, Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica.

90. William Albert Crampton Glynn Green

BIRTH: Abode at Christening suggests East Indies

CHRISTENING: William Albert Crampton Glynn Green Baptism 6 Mar 1822 John George Green,
Charlotte Elizabeth Green St George the Martyr Southwark

At christening the birth date is shown as 23 Oct 1818.  As his parents were married in London in June 1818 it would suggest they already new Charlotte was pregnant.  It would be unlikely that they would have travelled back to the East Indies with her in that condition, so in all likelyhood William was born in London.

James Alexander Silk Buckingham

CHRISTENING: (Aged 9 Or 4?)

James Alexander Silk BUCKINGHAM --
In an email dated 16 June 2003 Michael Green wrote, "Another little oddity.
The IGI record for the christening of James Alexander Silk Buckingham (4 Aug 1817 St Mylor Cornwall ) gives "age at christening" as "9", whereas I thought he was born 29 June 1813. Could have been a mis-reading of "4" I suppose - or just another IGI mistake."

In an email dated 23 Jan 2003, Katherine Williams wrote, "For my own connection, one major question has bothered me all along. Why would James Alexander Silk Buckingham marry Charlotte Elizabeth Albert, who was 14 years older than him? James was born 29 June 1813, place unknown, to James Silk Buckingham and Elizabeth Jennings, both of Cornwall.  Father, James S., 1786-1855, was a sea captain, world traveller, author, publisher and briefly a Member of Parliament for Sheffield 1832-1837. James A.S. was the eldest son; he and his older sister, Virginia Sappho, were christened together at the Buckingham family's parish church at Mylor, Cornwall, in 1817, presumably when father was home from one of his trips to sea.  Reading James Silk's Autobiography vol. 2, it appears the young family lived near London - probably near a port, but this is only a guess. If James A.S. married Charlotte Elizabeth Albert  about 1831-1832, he would have been under-age, and only 18 or 19.  I can think of a few reasons why such a young man would be marrying an "older woman", but doubt that the story will be found!  Even Charlotte's younger sister, Maria Rebecca Charlotte Albert, was older than James.  James A.S. entered the service of H.M.Customs in London about Nov. 1831 as Clerk in the Secretary's Office.  He was sworn -in on 30
Dec. 1831 (source: CUST 39/175).  It appears to me that his father-in-law, William John Albert,  would have influenced this posting."

James was transferred to Savana-la-Mar,Westmoreland, Jamaica, with the Customs Service 1835

Marriage Notes for Charlotte Elizabeth Albert and James Alexander Silk Buckingham

MARRIAGE: Both Katherine Williams and Michael Green have been researching this line. It gets a little interesting. Charlotte's first husband was John George GREEN.  He died and she married James Alexander Silk BUCKINGHAM. She died, a married her sister Maria Rebecca ALBERT. Maria died, and he married Eleanor Petgrave.

Charlotte Elizabeth's second marriage to James Alexander Silk BUCKINGHAM may have been about 1832.

91. Robert Silk Buckingham

Robert Silk BUCKINGHAM was born about 1832 died 1853 in Jamaica, West Indies about age 21, and was buried 25 Oct 1853 in Logwoods, Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica.

In an email dated 21 Jan 2003, Katherine Williams wrote, "I believe that the Robert Silk BUCKINGHAM buried 25 Oct. 1853 at Logwoods, Westmoreland parish, Jamaica, aged 21, was James A.S. BUCKINGHAM's son from his first marriage to Charlotte Elizabeth. This child would have been born c. 1832 and was therefore about two years old when his mother died. I have not found his baptism yet, so this is more speculation."

34. Emma Sophia Albert

was born 24 Jan 1807 was christened 15 Apr 1807 in St.Pancras Old Church, Pancras Road, Middlesex and died 30 Apr 1831 at age 24.

In the IGI is a record for Emma Sophia Albert, daughter of William John Albert and Sarah, christened 15 Apr 1807 at Saint Pancras, Old Church, London, England.

She is named in Sir Menasseh Masseh Lopes's will as daughter of Sarah Albert, wife of William John Albert, Esq.

In Dame Charlotte Lopes's will of 1831 she left £100 to each of Sarah Albert's daughters.

Emma married Joshua PEPPERCORN.

35. Maria Rebecca Charlotte Albert

was born 14 Aug 1810 in St. Pancras, Middlesex, England and was christened 7 Sep 1810 in St. Mary.

Unlike her siblings, I found no record of Maria in the IGI. (Linda Powers)

In an letter to Alan and Margaret Pereira dated 30 March 2003, Peter Pereira wrote that Maria Rebecca Charlotte Albert was baptised 2 Jan 1811 at St. Pancras. This was the same day and church as Manasseh Lopes Pereira (her Uncle).

She is named in Sir Menasseh Masseh Lopes's will as daughter of Sarah Albert, wife of William John Albert, Esq.

James A.S. BUCKINGHAM married again in Westmoreland parish, Jamaica, on 10 April 1851, to Eleanor PETGRAVE.  Death/burial records don't seem to exist for Jamaica showing any death of a Maria BUCKINGHAM.  However, I will have to guess that the following children (from indexes microfilmed by the LDS which I have read) were Maria's.  Parents' names not included, so we can speculate only:-
Charlotte E. Buckinghambapt. 1837; probably died 1837
James S."        bapt.  1839
Albert                  "        bapt. 1842  (my gt.grandfather, born c. 1841)

James H.            "        bapt. 1847; died 1847
Emily Helen        "        bapt. 1848         (All events in Westmoreland parish)

James and his third wife, Eleanor, went on to have the following children:
Charlotte Emily bapt. 07 March 1852 (born Jan. 1852), Westmoreland parish
Charles G.         bapt. 1855 (from index only), buried as Charles I. in 1858.
Charles A.         bapt. 1860.   "        "          "  . All events in  Westmoreland parish.
I believe that the Robert Silk BUCKINGHAM buried 25 Oct. 1853 at Logwoods,
Westmoreland parish, Jamaica, aged 21, was James A.S. BUCKINGHAM's son from his first marriage to Charlotte Elizabeth.  This child would have been born c. 1832 and was therefore about two years old when his mother died.  I have not found his baptism yet, so this is more speculation.

36. Adelaide Sarah Skrine Albert

was born 1813 in London, Middlesex was christened 25 May 1813 in St. Pancras Old Church, Pancras Road, Middlesex died 27 Apr 1868 in Burton Road, Brixton, Surrey, England at age 55, and was buried in Cold Ashton, Somerset, England.

On November 19, 1935 in a letter to Addie, Beatrice Whittington wrote, "Canon Whittington had another son.... His name was Duncan. We saw a little of him at Warley." Could this be the Warleigh of the Skrine's???

In the the IGI is a record for Adelaide Sarah Skrine Albert, daughter of William John Albert and Sarah, christened 25 May 1813 at St. Pancras Old Church, Middlesex, England.

In Dame Charlotte Lopes's will of 1831 is the following: "I give and bequeath, direct, limit, and appoint unto each of the daughters of my said niece Sarah ALBERT now living the sum of one hundred pounds stock, other part of the said ten thousand pounds stock South Sea Annuities, on their attaining their respective ages of twenty one years."

According to the 1851 Census for Powick, Worcestershire, "Adalaide" was the wife of George Whittington, she was 37 years old, and she had been born in London, Middlesex.

She is named in Sir Menasseh Masseh Lopes's will as daughter of Sarah Albert, wife of William John Albert, Esq.

In her November 17, 1929 letter to Addie, Beatrice Whittington wrote about what she remembered as a small child. She recalled Uncle Willie [William R.P. Whittington] at Grandma's home in Brixton and Uncle Arthur "when grandma was lodging at Mrs. Halfpenny's in Market Lavington Street."

According to Arthur Whittington in a letter he wrote to his brother William about 1886, "I had a letter the other day from Minnie telling me of the death of Jack Whittington. Fancy his leaving his money to Charlie Sainsbury. The least he could have done would have been to have divided it among us after the way in which he swindled the poor old Mother." [Jack Whittington would be John Whittington, son of Robert Whittington and Mary Croome. Adelaide's husband George was his first cousin.]

"Once on leave from Canada we stayed with Grannie at Brixton," wrote Beatrice in a letter to Addie.  "Uncle Willie, a big man with a fair beard was there, and certainly not married then. Aunt Minnie was there, and Uncle John, and their boys, and Addie. Grannie gave her and us three girls grey woolen dresses flecked with black and trimmed with tabs of black velvet with white buttons. I must have been about 7," which meant the visit took place about 1867.

On April 9, 1867 "Adelaide Sarah Skrine Whittington of 23 Burton Villas, Burton Road, Brixton, in the County of Surrey [just South of London], Widow" borrowed £150 from William Hitchcock. She pledged as collateral the estate she inherited from her son Albert Thomas Whittington. Her son William Robert Pereira acted as co-signer, and his collateral was his share of the estate of "Mary Harrison, late of Bath, deceased." The interest rate was 5%, and loan was to be repaid on April 9, 1868. On January 29, 1868, William Hitchcock was paid £159 pounds, 3 shillings, which paid everything in full.

On December 28, 1872 William Hitchcock, one of her executors, wrote William R.P. Whittington concerning an IOU against his mother's estate. According to this letter and subsequent correspondence on September 23, 1873 and January 1, 1874, she had borrowed money from her son-in-law, Captain Glubb, married to Willie's sister Carrie. Captain Glubb gave up the debt to Mrs. Whittington, but later claimed that Willie had promised to pay it before Glubb had given it up.

In the September 23, 1873 letter to William RP Whittington, William Hitchcock wrote at the bottom, "Mrs. Whittington, 26 Alexandra Road, Bedford." This is the same street referred to by Hettie Mahony as she remembered her childhood.

In a letter dated September 30, 1943 to Addie, Beatrice Whittington wrote that she had attended Robert Hugh Whittington's funeral since she last heard from Addie. It was at Cold Ashton "where so many of us are buried. I gazed at the tablets where our near relatives are commemorated, but fearing to keep [Robert's sister Joyce waiting], failed to find our Grandmother's grave (which I saw years ago)." She must have been referring to Adelaide's grave.

In an email on 31 Oct 2000 Margaret McGregor wrote of the following monumental inscription she saw on the North wall of the nave in the church at Cold Ashton:
"In Memory of Adelaide Sarah Skrine Whittington, widow of the late George Whittington esquire who died at London, April 27th 1868, Aged 55."

Margaret McGregor saw in the Cold Ashton churchyard the following:
"Sacred To the memory of
GEORGE WHITTINGTON

DIED NOV. 21st 1855
ALSO
ADELAIDE SARAH SKRINE
-------OF--------

[Transcript by Margaret McGregor 3 Nov. 2000 from Office Copy of will received 11 April 1995]

In the September 23, 1873 letter to William RP Whittington, William Hitchcock (the family attorney) wrote at the bottom, "Mrs. [Adelaide Sarah Skrine] Whittington, 26 Alexandra Road, Bedford."

In her will dated 27 Feb 1868, Adelaide mentions her friend James William Muttlebury of the same address.  Present and witnessing her signature were William Duff and Jane Forsyth Duff, both of 11 Orsett Terrace.
She also writes in her will that she owns the lease of a house, 1 Durham Place, Chelsea, which is only minutes away from King's Road (where George Whittington was living in 1836 at Manor House)

See death of Charlotte Pereira (wife of Manasseh) formerly Duff 11 Oct, 1863 as informant, Sarah Gray lives at 8 Orsett Terrace.  Peter also notes from 1851 Census for 18 Woburn Square, Bloomsbury, London, address of Lt.General Manasseh Lopez Pereira and his wife, Charlotte, that William Duff 53 unmarried and Jane Duff 52 unmarried were visitors.

At any rate, it appears things weren't settled for quite some time. In 1874 William Robert Periera WHITTINGTON received 2 letters, one from attorney William Hitchcock and the other from brother George, discussing a claim by a sister's husband John GLUBB against ASSAW's estate in the amount of £70. George also wrote in his 13 May 1874 letter, "W.H. [William Hitchcock] has interferred with the suit of Glubb v. Buckingham. He intends to argue the case for the Jeffersons [not 100% sure this is the name] which is against us. We shall get less and have to pay much greater costs. The power you send had better be made out to receive allmoney you will become entitled to. (The suit above is with regard to Hugh Albert's £2091.)"  George JCW

George WHITTINGTON was born about 1 Sep 1805 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire was christened on 4 Sep 1805 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire died on 21 Nov 1855 in Great Cheverel, Wiltshire about age 50, and was buried in Cold Ashton, Gloucestershire.
George married Adelaide Sarah Skrine ALBERT (b. 1813, d. 27 Apr 1868) about 1832.

George Whittington
According to Arthur Boxley Whittington, William R.P. came from a family of slave traders and that several of William R.P.'s brothers were Plantation people in the deep South. There's a problem with this scenario in that the "the British Parliament outlawed the slave trade in 1807, authorizing search and seizure of suspect ships and payment for the liberation of slaves. In 1833, Britain entirely outlawed slavery." In 1808, the US Government put an end to the trade in slaves from Africa. Because of this, it is extremely unlikely that William R.P., born in 1842, or his brothers, born later, would have been involved with this.

George Whittington, son of George and Catherine Whittington, was christened at Chipping Sodbury, Gloucesterhire, 4 September 1805.

In the 1851 Census of Powick, Worcestershire, he is listed as "John" Whittington, head of household, 47 years old, born in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire.

William Coarthope wrote, "George Whittington, married and has issue."

On January 18, 1989 in a letter to his brother William R.P. Whittington, Arthur Whittington wrote, "...for am I not the seventh son of a seventh son...?" His father was not a seventh son unless six earlier sons did not survive childhood and Coarthope failed to make note of them.

There is no mention of a George Whittington in the Pigot Directory 1830 Somerset.

There is no mention of any Whittingtons in the Boyd's Marriage Index of Grooms (1801-1850) [Film # 0226281, Waters-Winn].

According to the 1851 Census, he and his wife had been living in London, Middlesex, when their first daughter Mary was born 1833-4.

At the time of his son George John Charles's baptism on 31 August 1836, George was a solicitor living at Manor House, King's Road in the Parish of Saint Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex County, England. The 1851 Census agrees with their living in Chelsea at the time of his birth.

From Pigot's Directory of London 1839, "George Whittington, solicitor, Quality Ct. Chancery Lane."

From Pigot's Commercial Directory of Kent, Surrey & Sussex 1839, there is a Whittington on p. 164 in Clapham, Surrey, where Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes, Adelaide's great grandfather, was from, but it is a Thomas Whittington, butcher.

The 1851 Census states that the family had been living at "Gt. Russell St., London" when children Thomas, Caroline, and William were born, which means they were there from about 1838 to at least 1843.

An Internet person said that Russell Street is in central London, just off Drury Lane, adjacent to the Theatre Royal. "I would imagine that it would have been there in 1840."

At the time of his son William Robert Pereira's baptism on 12 September 1843, George was a "Gentleman" living at Imbredge [sp?] Place in the Parish of Saint Pancras, Middlesex County, England.

The 1851 Census states this his son Richard was born in Antwerp, Belgium about 1845.

At the time of Alfred Richardson's christening on July 19, 1848 and Arthur Frederick Staunton's on August 4, 1850, he was a "Gentleman" living in Powick, Worstershire. The 1851 Census states the family was living in Powick at the time these children were born.

In the 1851 Census of Powick, Worcestershire, he is listed as married to "Adalaide" and a "retired solicitor," and the family was living at Rectory House in Powick. Eight children were living with them, as well as the following people unrelated to the family: Caroline Smith, 70 years old, widowed, lodger;  Fanny Mitchell, 18 years old, single, governess; Ellen Walker, 22 years old, single, nurse; Elvira Bennett, single, 19 years old, house servant; and John Thomas, single, 18 years old, groom. Maybe his middle name was John, and he was called that to differentiate between he and his father George.

In his mother's will is the following: "as to all my Real and Personal Estate I give devise and bequeath the same unto my son George Whittington his heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever and I appoint my said son Executor of this my will dated this sixteenth day of September one thousand eight hundred and fifty three." In other words he got everything except £1000, which was to be split between his two surviving sisters.

In their Whittington BMD sent in Nov 2004, Alan & Margaret Pereira noted:
Deaths Dec 1855 Whittington George Devizes 5a 57

In an email on 31 Oct 2000 Margaret McGregor wrote of the following monumental inscription she saw on the North wall of the nave in the church at Cold Ashton:
"Sacred to the memory of George Whittington, the only son of George and Catherine Whittington Born April 4th 1804 Died Nov 21st 1855"
Margaret McGregor saw in the Cold Ashton churchyard the following:
"Sacred To the memory of

Also, "Related entry from Cold Ashton Bishop's Transcrips and also Parish Register:
Burial: 1855 Nov. 27 George Whittington, 51yrs. Great Cheverill, Wilts."
From Margaret McGregor: "Will of George WHITTINGTON dated 19 August 1855 proved London 14 December 1855

"This is the Will of me George Whittington formerly of London and now of Great Cheverel Wilts Gentleman I pray to yield up my soul to the Almighty in confidence that he will pardon my many offences and negligences for the sake of our Saviour Jesus Christ. I give devise and bequeath my entire real and Personal Estate whatsoever either at law or in equity unto my dear Wife Adelaide Sarah Skrine Whittington To hold to my said Wife her heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever according to the natures and respects thereof And I appoint my said Wife Executrix of this my Will. Witness my hand this 19th day in August one thousand eight hundred and fifty five - George Whittington- Signed and declared by the testator George Whittington as and for his Will in the presence of us who in his presence and in the presence of each other and at his request have hereto set our names as witnesses to the due execution hereof - Charles Hitchcock Surgeon Lavington Wilts - Mary Weeks Servant to Mr. Whittington//

At the time of his son George John Charles's marriage on April 28, 1859, the family was living in Bath, and he was working as a solicitor. Hmmm.

Noted events in his life were:
He worked as a Solicitor; Gentleman.

George married Adelaide Sarah Skrine ALBERT daughter of William John ALBERT Esq. and Sarah PEREIRA, about 1832. Adelaide was born in 1813 in London, Middlesex was christened on 25 May 1813 in St. Pancras Old Church, Pancras Road, Middlesex died on 27 Apr 1868 in Burton Road, Brixton, Surrey, England at age 55, and was buried in Cold Ashton, Somerset, England.

Charlotte WHITTINGTON was born about 1852.

102. Whittington

born from Mar to Jun 1838 in Bloomsbury.

In the Whittington pedigree by the unknown author, there is a line indicating an unnamed child was born to George and Adelaide. Usually this means the child died at birth or soon after.

On January 18, 1989 in a letter to his brother William R.P. Whittington, Arthur Whittington wrote, "...for am I not the seventh son of a seventh son...?" If this question is true, then this child must have been a son.
However, Arthur was probably wrong about his grandfather's being a seventh son, too.

There is no mention of this child in the 1851 Census for Powick, Worcester.

In Whittington BMD sent by Alan & Margaret Pereira in November 2004, there is the following:
Births Jun 1838 Whittington Albert Thomas Bloomsbury 1 38
Whittington Male Bloomsbury 1 38 [Could this second entry be the unknown son and a twin at that?]

103. Albert Thomas Whittington

CHRISTENING: Albert Thomas Whittington Baptism 26 Jun 1838 George Whittington,
Adelaide Sarah Skrine Whittington St George, Bloomsbury Camden

Tom Whittington born from Mar to Jun 1838 in Bloomsbury or Gt. Russell St., London and died on 23 Nov 1866 in Melbourne, Australia
Another name for Albert was Abby Tom Thomas.

According to the 1851 Census for Powick, Worcestershire, he was called "Thomas," was 13 years old and had been born at "Gt. Russell St., London."

In her November 17, 1929 letter to Addie, Beatrice Whittington wrote about her childhood and her aunts, uncles and cousins. "Uncle Tom, I don't remember."

In an email on 31 Oct 2000 Margaret George McGregor wrote of the following monumental inscription she saw on the North wall of the nave in the church at Cold Ashton: "Albert Thomas, Third son of the above, who died at Melbourne in the colony of Victoria the 23rd day of November 1866."

At his death he left the residue of his estate to "Alfred Brooks Malleson and George Ganard, both of Melbourne in the Colony of Victoria in Australia, upon trust for his mother."

106. Richard Henry Whittington

Dick Whittington born in 1845 in Antwerp, Belgium
died on 27 Jan 1874 in Dutoitspan, Griqualand West, South Africa at age 29, and was buried in Kimberly, South Africa.
The cause of his death was Peritonitis.
Another name for Richard was Dick.

According to the 1851 Census for Powick, Worcestershire, he was 6 years old and had been born in "Antwerp, Belgium."

At some point early in 1870 in a letter to his future sister-in-law Ellen Boxley, he wrote from 190 Collins Street East, Melbourne, "I should have written to you some months ago when I first heard of your engagement to my brother, but he is such a queer fellow about letter writing, having only given me your Christian name and your address as India, so I thought it useless to write a letter address: Ellen, India.... I am sorry that you made your choice before seeing the rest of the family, for I am certain that if you had seen me first Bill could not have had the shadow of a chance. I have already to make a complaint against you and that is that you have taken away all chances of my ever seeing Bill out in this Colony as he is now sure to keep to the India line...." He then asked her to write and tell him about herself. "Bill tells me that you are a very nice girl. Well of course you are, for if he did not think so, he would not have fallen in love with you." He ended the letter saying, "I must now close this stupidly written letter...." and signed "RH Whittington, commonly called 'Dick.'"

On January 1, 1874 in a letter to William Robert Pereira Whittington, William Hitchcock wrote regarding a claim by Captain Glubb on Adelaide Sarah Skrine Whittington's estate, "I have told [George] as I told you I think that beyond a sum of £13, which Mrs. Whittington disputed, the debt ought to be paid, but George will not allow it, and in the absence of Arthur and Richard, it cannot be done."

On January 29, 1874 in a letter to Jack Glubb, Arthur Whittington wrote that his brother Dick had "taken ill on the 17th and died on the 27th" of peritonitis. A quote from an article in the Diamond News stated: "Here we need only say that as an officer of the force in which he served, he was pre-eminently efficient and, according to popular opinion, should long ago have obtained a promotion. When he fell ill he was taken by Mr. James Hall of Distoulspan into that gentleman's hospitable house and received from him and other friends during his last days every kindness and attention which could possibly be shown to one who was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. The funeral took place at Kimberly yesterday afternoon and was attended by all the friends of the deceased and by every available man of the Police force. The latter fired a volley over the grave. The Rev. Mr. Doxal conducted the last rites of the church." A quote from the Births, Death and Marriages of that same paper stated: "Died at Dutoitspan,  Griqualand West, on January 27th after a short illness, Richard Henry Whittington, aged 28 years, late ensign 17th
Foot and of the Griqualand West Constabulary, son of the late George Whittington of Gloucestershire, England."

On May 13, 1874 in a letter to his brother Willie from Market Lavington, George wrote that he had heard nothing more "about poor old Dick."

Arthur Whittington remembered, "Poor old Dick was getting very bald, almost as bad as George," in a letter to William R.P. Whittington he wrote on October 30, 1888.

On August 1, 1916 in a letter to Ellen, Annie Pont wrote that she had received the pictures Ellen had sent. "I did not recognize Willie. It's the first photo I have seen of him without a beard. Do you know he reminds me of his brother Dick Whittington, whom I saw at your wedding? I did not know there was so much likeness between the brothers."
In her November 17, 1929 letter to Addie, Beatrice Whittington wrote about what she remembered as a small child. "Uncle Dick, I seem to remember. Yes, I certainly remember the shape of his nails, for I notice people's hands, when he came to market Lavington, and we were little children

Du Toits Pan
South Africa'a first diamond was found in the Hopetown district in 1866.  Diggers began to arrive from all over the world once the news was broadcast.  Pioneers travelled to the area by pony-cart, ox-wagon or even on foot.
About 1869 diggers started to move away from the banks of the Vaal River and in early 1871 came the discovery of the Du Toits Pan, Bultfontein, De Beers and Kimberley Mines drawing more men to the 'dry diggings'.  These four mines are contained in a circle three miles in diameter.  Du Toits pan was the name of the farm where the diamonds were discovered.
Disputes among the diggers were complicated by the question of ownership of the soil.  A proclamation in 1871, declaring Griqualand West to be British Territory was disputed by the Orange Free State, whose claims were finally settled in 1876 by payment of £90,000.
In September 1917, a diamond of 442 carats, reported to be the finest and most valuable stone found in the Kimberley area was obtained from Du toits Pan.
The main road through present day Kimberley is named Du Toits Pan Road.

(Medical):On January 29, 1874 in a letter to Jack Glubb written from Kimberly, Diamond Fields, South Africa, Arthur informed the family of his brother Dick's death by peritonitis. "I enclose in this letter some of the poor old boy's hair. I want you to put a little away from me." He also instructed him that he wanted Minnie "to write to Mr. James Hall to thank him for his great kindness to Dick" in taking care of him.
With this letter he enclosed clippings of an article and the death notice in the Diamond News.

Arthur Frederick Staunton WHITTINGTON
was born on 26 Jun 1850 in Powick, Worcestershire was christened on 4 Aug 1850 in Powick, Worcestershire and died in 1911 in South Africa at age 61. The cause of his death was Illness.

In a letter written about 1886 to William R.P. Whittington, brother Arthur Whittington [then living in South Africa] wrote, "I often see George Wriford's wife. I have no doubt Minnie has told you that he has deserted her and gone to Australia leaving her with three youngsters (one since dead). She, poor woman, is awfully hard up. She is living with her sister and takes in dress-making."

39. William Simpson Pereira

CHRISTENING: Name: William Simpson Pareira Gender: Male Birth Date: 8 Dec 1803 Christening Place: St John, Hackney, London, Eng Father's Name: Mordet Pareira Mother's Name: Maria Maternal Grandfather's Name: John Simpson Maternal Grandmother's Name: Mary

BURIAL: Public Grave containing 15 Burials

The following entry was found in the records at Dr. William's Library, London.  The Library has a collection of Presbyterian, Independent and Baptist registers.

St.John,Middx. is Hackney.  Peter Pereira took the exact entry from Dr.William's Library, 14 Gordon Square, London, WC1 telephone 0171 387 3727 (address found by M.A.Pereira l999).  "The library is a collection of Baptist, Independent and Presbyterian registers." PP

Birth registered 1st March, 1804

William Simpson Pereira born 8th December, 1803: Parish of St. John, Middlesex
son of Mordet Pereira and Maria dau of John and Mary Simpson

For Census information see marriage notes
The 1851 Census gives Hackney as his birth place
The 1861 Census gives Kent
The 1871 Census gives Sevenoaks, Kent

John Simpson (father of Maria) lived at Riverhead, Sevenoaks, Kent.  So it is possible that William Simpson Pereira was born in Kent and the birth registered 3 months later.

Jane Edgson is the informant on the certificate when her father died at 54 Clarendon Street, on the 3rd February 1892 age 92.

Was son Dorothy "Maria" Simpson and Mordecai Pereira, possibly "born at the home of his grandfather, (Rev.) John Simpson of Riverhead, Sevenoaks and the birth only entered in the records three months later" (Peter Pereira of Brighton).

3 February, 1892: William Simpson Pereira died aged 92 at 54 Clarendon Street, Somers Town, St.Pancras.  Registered by Jane Edgson (daughter).

Harriet Odams

CHRISTENING: Adams Harriet dau of Charles and Sarah Adams bapt 6 Oct born 13 Sep 1805
see genealogy\\pereiraimages\\AdamsHarrietBorn18050913Bapt18051006.jpg/i

BURIAL: Harriet Pereira (shown as Pezeira) aged 30 years=born 1804.  Buried 5 Jan 1834 St Pancras Parish Church Camden.  Abode: Middlesex Street

Harriet is shown as christened as Adams but married as Odams

Based on the fact that her son William died only a couple of months after her, this must have been a difficult birth with Harriet dying giving birth and William a short time later.  Based on this it is assumed both mother and child were living at the same address.

113. Joseph Pereira

2 possible 1841 Census entries
JOSEPH PEREIRA 9 Bromley, Dartford & Lewisham
JOSEPH PEREIRA 9 North & West Kent - parish/towns C

Joseph is shown as a child of Harriet Adams by Peter Pereira of Brighton.  He believes that Joseph was born before Willam Pereira (1834).  This conflicts with the 1861 Census but that Census is suspect as William names all his children whether they were living there or not.  Maybe he was not 25 but 28, which would make him born 1833.  His wife was born 1828.
Also on a PTP dated Letter 8th November 1999, Peter said that the parents of Phoebe were John & Mary.  Our Phoebe named her first son, John and her first daughter Mary.

114. William Pereira

BURIAL: William Pereira abt 1833 24 Mar 1834 St Pancras Parish Church Camden Age 3m
Abode: Middlesex Street

William died 3 months after his Mother (Harriet Adams)
Harriet's death is shown as 5th January 1834 & William's death as 24th March 1834, which seams to tie this information together.  The thing that thrown this in doubt is that we have Joseph born about 1836 i.e. after his mother's death.  Was Joseph the son of William Simson Pereira's other wife Phoebe Turner?

Research in Ipswich did not produce Pheobe Turner born anywhere in Suffolk.

Also on a PTP dated Letter 8th November 1999, Peter said that the parents of Phoebe were possibly John & Mary.  Our Phoebe named her first son, John and her first daughter Mary.

Peter Thomas Pereira advises that "Apart from the Pereira family the two storey house was also occupied by 12 other adults and 9 children under the age of 12.  The rate payer was a 38 year old Cabman named Jacob Marchant living there with his family.  The house, address today is Carol Street, was still standing in 1988."

11 Apr 1942 birth of Mary Ann Simpson Pereira...
Peter Pereira advises "The rate payer for number 8 Caroline Street was John Brook until 1840, followed by John White, who was still listed in 1842.  Charles Childs took over as the rate payer at number 6 in March 1842 and this could be the reason for the move of the family to number 8."

Daughter Maria Jane was born 14 Feb 1844 at 10 York Street although Isabella and William, both born before the 1851 Census are shown born in Bayham Street, so by the time of the 1851 Census in March the family had returned to 10 York Street shown thus -

146. Alfred Pereira

CENSUS: Notes from Census event: age should be 27

CHRISTENING: Alfred Pereira Born 24 May 1853 Baptised 1 Feb 1857 St Anne, Limehouse Tower Hamlets
Parents: Henry Pereira, Sarah Anne Pereira formerly Hewitt.  Abode: Bethnal Green Road
Father's Occupation Oilman
Christened along with sister Anne and niece Adelaide Gregory by older sister Henrietta

Assumption is that Fred and Alfred are the same person!  The 186&71 Censuses are more likely to be correct as Alfred(Fred) is a scholar in 1861.  The deduction, which Peter also makes is that Alfred(Fred) is not aged 37 in 1881 but 27.

1871 Census [from The Parlour Family History by Andy & Sue Parlour 2008]
In 1871 they were living at 9, St Thomas Road, Mile End Old Town. The census read thus: William Parlour aged 51, shoemaker, Sarah wife (should read Lydia) aged 50, Susan (Esther) daughter aged 26, Elizabeth (Louisa Ann) daughter 23, William son aged 21 wood chopper, Henry son aged 18 shoemaker, George Alfred son (my gt grandfather) aged 16 shoemaker, Charles son aged 14 shoemaker and finally Annie daughter aged 11 shoemaker. Why Lydia, Esther and Louisa are down as different names one can only guess-but we have found this happening before.
