Subject: PEREIRA -- Sarah Pereira

In a letter to Addie Whittington (Sarah's great granddaughter via grandson William Robert Pereira WHITTINGTON) dated Easter Day, 1926, Beatrice Whittington [Sarah's great granddaughter via George John Charles WHITTINGTON] wrote, " You know our Great Grannie Albert was a Jewess, the favorite niece of Sir Massey Lopes - the great Sir Massey. I think her maiden name was Pereira - one of Uncle Willie's names. She was blind, supposed to have cried her eyes out for Great Grandfather Albert, who was a scoundrel, and a German, to boot. And that is why Sir Massey did not make her his heiress. I mean the fact of a connection with the scoundrel. His property went to his nephew Ralph. The present man is Sir Henry and married to a Lady Albertha.... A Captain Pereira whom we knew very well ... once looked up their owner. I don't think it was the present man. Captain Pereira traced his relationship, and the answer he got was "It may be so. It may be so."

Beatrice Whittington continued, "The old Grannie was a dear old thing, very stately, and [looks like 'wold,' except it's not a 'w'] to courts. Aunt Minnie said she asked, of Great Grannie Whittington [Catherine Richardson Whittington], whether she was not very 'countryfied.' My father and the other boys would talk with assumed voices, to make her think there were visitors present, and she would rise and make a stately courtesy [sic]. I think I have heard that she had every tooth in her head when she died. Her back was very straight and she used to sit in a straight-backed chair. My father was not proud of the Jewish connection, though he would talk, in fun, of getting back to Jerusalem one day."

Alive when Dame Charlotte Lopes (Charlotte Yeates) willed money to her.  She must also have been separated from her husband William John Albert, as he was specifically excluded from Dame Charlotte's inheritance.

In an email dated 25 May 2003, Michael Green wrote, "There is still one thing that is bothering me. Although we think William John Albert is the one referred to in Mrs P as the brother of
Charlotte who served HM Customs, the only WJA I can find a record of was born to a Joseph Albert(e) and Ann Lloyd (Church of LDS, British Isles Vital Records Second Edition):
ALBERTE, William John
Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 12 Jan 1773
Christening Date: 27 Jan 1773 Recorded in: Westminster, London, England
Collection: St James
Father: Joseph ALBERTE
Mother: Ann
I assume this is another WJA otherwise our theory is wrong! The final "E" appears optional as one other child of this marriage did not have it. However the dates and place are perfect for "our" WJA. I will check this out next time I am in London - it wouldn't be the first time the LDS has got it wrong!"
In an email dated 15 Aug 2003, Michael Green wrote, "In London yesterday I finally confirmed that William John Albert is the right chap. He was born to Lewis and Elizabeth Albert 22 Dec 1775, baptised St Georges Hanover Square 22 Jan 1776. I told you that I had found another WJA, bap 27 Jan 1773 to Joseph and Ann Albert(e) at Westminster St James and I was worried that we'd got the wrong one.
However I looked for this reference and couldn't find it - although others I had at this church were there. It was just on a long shot I tried St Georges and found him!"

In an email dated 22 Jan 2003, Michael Green wrote, "William John Albert b. 1775 (guess! Mrs P. gives him as second son). Found a post at the Customs a mentioned above (see Charlotte). Married Sarah Periera 28 July 1798 St Marylebone. Died first quarter 1842, possibly in Dunkirk."
In 1790 Frederick Albert had a conversation with the Queen that "led to the appointment of the two boys - Hugh to the Ordnance Department, and William to the Customs - at about 60 l. a year each."[p. 188 - 190]

In the record of his marriage to Sarah Pereira, his last name is spelled "Albet."

In their Pereira-Nye Gedom Alan and Margaret Pereira noted that on the 28 Nov 1811 christening of Henry Pereira (son of William John Albert's brother-in-law Menasseh Pereira) in Pondichery, India his sponsors were: Sir Massa Lopes, Bart. (Great Uncle), William Albert (Uncle), Isabella Albert (his daughter=cousin) by Chr1824-Chr1826

In an email dated 19 Feb 2004, Alan Pereira wrote, "Peter confirms in his Henry Pereira Biography that the godparents were present in Pondicherry."

William John Albert is mentioned in the will of Sir Menasseh Masseh Lopes.

Dame Charlotte Lopes in her will set up a trust to make certain he did not have access to any of the money left to Sarah Pereira Albert.

In a letter to Addie dated Easter Day, 1926, Beatrice Whittington wrote that Great Grandfather Albert "was a scoundrel, and a German, to boot."

In an email dated 31 Oct 2001, Katharine Williams wrote concerning daughter Charlotte Elizabeth's death. She quoted "a man conducting a BUCKINGHAM one-name study, as follows:-
Maydsley, page 258, ".... daughter of William John Albert, Esq., Late of H. M. Customs".

On May 13, 1874 George Whittington [Beatrice's father] wrote to his brother Willie concerning the estate of their mother, Adelaide Sarah Skrine Whittington. He also mentioned a lawsuit concerning Hugh Albert's £2091.

In an email dated 21 Jan 2003, Michael Green wrote, "Two more clues I need to follow up when I go, that I only discovered yesterday, are:-
In the Probate Indices
PROB 11/1958 09 March 1842 Will of William John Albert of Dunkirk , France This could sort out the WJA's ! I wonder what he was doing in Dunkirk?
PROB 11/2011 17 February 1845 Will of Hugh Lewis Albert, late Paymaster of Her Majesty's fifty-eighth Regiment of Infantry of Cheltenham , Gloucestershire.
Death registered in Brighton 1st Quarter 1845.(from http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/)
This is definitely the brother of "my" Charlotte Elizabeth (and possibly the uncle of "yours" and brother of the above) as the reference to his regiment ties up with that in Mrs Papendick. It also gives his second name which is that of his father."
In an email dated 15 Aug 2003, Michael Green wrote, "The Gentleman's Magazine for Feb 1842 notes his death "lately" at Dunkirk in France (which we had suspected from his will) esq.,late of HM Customs, aged 66."

Shown as William John Albet in the IGI

Also according to an email dated 26 Nov 2003 from Linda Powers :-
In the IGI there is a record for "Charlotte Elizth. Albert, daughter of John Willm. Albert and his wife Sarah, christened 22 Jun 1799 at St. Maryleborne, Saint Mary-st. Marylbone Roads, London, England."

Subj: «tab»WJA Will Date: «tab»Sunday, February 2, 2003 2:08:31 PM
From Michael Green (michael.green73@ntlworld.com) on 1 Feb 2003. His email is titled WJA Will.

Filed in Book Item Wills: William John Albert 22 December 1835

Death date of Jan-Feb 1842 is based on the Will being proved 9th March 1842.  It is very unlikely that it took longer than 2 months from death to prove the Will.
In a letter from Peter Thomas Pereira 20 January 2003 he indicated that WJA died at Dunkirk, France in October 1842 aged 66 (=b.1776).  This doesn't fit with the proving date of the will and may have been Oct 1841.

In a letter to Alan and Margaret Pereira dated 18 February 2004, Peter Pereira wrote, "Moving on to William John Albert I rechecked the Jewish records that definitely state the date he died in Dunkirk was October 1842. His will was proved in March 1842, so he probably died in 1841 which I may be able to check. His will states that was was 'formally' at London Street, Fitzroy Square, Middlesex, which is the same street given by Rebecca Lopez Pereira when she married in 1811 at Hastings. I was surprised to see the name of Rachel Pereira as one of the group of four when WJA mentions the properties in Thames Street, London, which judging by the names of the parishes is probably the Lower Thames Street of today. It maybe worth a look at different records to see what I can find. It has been said that WJA was a scoundrel but the other two characters I've always considered as being 'early-day' con-men. [?]  Sarah his wife appears in the will a couple of times mentioned with no affection but he names none of his children other than his son Hugh Charles Albert. I have enclosed a couple of very interesting
documents relating to the application for a marriage licence for Mordecai Pereira which states that he had to be living in the parish for four weeks. The same would have had to apply to WJA when he married in 1798. He married by licence and would have been around 22 or 23 years old. I get the impression that his father Lewis Albert was a page at the Palace of St. James. Was WJA at the Palace at the time of his marriage?"
In a letter to Alan and Margaret Pereira dated 27 June 2004, Peter Pereira wrote concerning the property located in parishes mentioned in William John Albert's will, " The church of St. Magnus the Martyr is in Lower Thames Street, London
The church of St. Botolph Bilingsgate was destroyed in the Great Fire of London and not rebuilt. The parish was united with that of St. George, Botolph Lane.
The church of St. George was also destroyed in the fire but later rebuilt only to be demolished in the early nineteen hundreds.

31. Hugh Albert

As is quite often the case, the name of an infant who dies is used again in the family.  In this case, the next born child.  In all probability, this child died within the first few months of birth but we can only be sure that he was dead by the time the next child was born. (19 Oct 1802)

In a letter to Alan and Margaret Pereira dated 30 March 2003 from Peter Thomas Pereira of Brighton: he wrote, "Hugh Albert born 15 July 1800 at Russell Place. This information comes from the Jewish Records."

On May 13, 1874 from Market Lavington in a letter to his brother Willie, George mentioned a lawsuit concerning Hugh Albert's £2091. He advised Willie to send him his power of attorney, but warned that he might have to assign it to someone as he "may leave England before the money is paid." [I wish there had been more information on this, but it's all I have.] I don't know when he died.

Isabella said "I am the daughter of William John Albert, he is abroad; my mother lives at Chelsea."

In the IGI is a record for Isabella Ann Albert, daughter of William John Albert and Sarah, christened 29 Nov 1803 at Saint Pancras, Old Church, London, England.

In their Pereira-Nye Gedom Alan and Margaret Pereira noted that on the 28 Nov 1811 christening of Henry Pereira, son of William John Albert's brother-in-law Menasseh Pereira, in Pondichery, India his sponsors were: Sir Massa Lopes, Bart.

In her letter of 12 Mar 2004, Margaret Pereira wrote referencing an email dated 19 Feb 2004. "I offer another aspect of your good question as to why Isabella age 8 is sponsor in that she is godmother, and cousin, to the other two, Sir Massa Lopes, Bart. and William Albert, being godfathers. Peter confirms in his Henry Pereira Biography that the godparents were present in Pondicherry. Possibly of no relevance is the French (Catholic) custom back to 1700s and probably earlier to have siblings as godparents no matter how young and usually the child carried the godparents' names, which has been useful when the relevant part of the page has been torn."

She is named in Sir Menasseh Masseh Lopes's will as daughter of Sarah Albert, wife of William John Albert, Esq.

In Dame Charlotte Lopes's will of 1831 she left £100 to each of Sarah Albert's daughters.

In FreeBMD there is the following entry under
Deaths Sep 1851: ALBERT Isabella Anne Upton on Severn 18 341.
The place matches that of the death of a Sarah Albert in recorded in the Mar 1851 quarter. Could mother and unmarried daughter have lived together?

THE KING'S GERMAN LEGION«tab»«tab»«tab»Peter Pereira - Brighton
In 1804, 2,678 men, four battalions of the King's German Legion were stationed at 'Bexhill in Sussex at a time when the local population was less than 1,000. The Legion stayed at Bexhill for ten years.
The KGL was made up of 75% Hanoverians, 18% Germans and the remainder were termed 'foreigners'.
The 7th Line Battalion was formed after the KGL had sailed to Hanover from Kent in 1805 and arrived in early 1806.
Lord Cathcart the Commander of the expedition" returned to England and in May 1806 the 7th and 8th Line Battalions were sent to Winchester to join the 5th and 6th. In the winter of 1806 - 1807 orders were issued to the KGL for service overseas and then cancelled.
Eventually in April 1807 the KGL including the 7th Line Battalion set sail and on July 8th began arriving at the island of Rugen, Swedish Pomerania, opposite the fortress of Stralsand. The 6th, 7th and 8th Line Battalions moved into Stralsand which was then under attack by the French. A vigorous battle took place on August 6th and on the 19th Stralsand was given over to the French.
After fighting in and around Copenhagen the KGL embarked for England at the end of October and many men, women and children lost their lives due to a violent storm in heavy seas.
With the capture of the Danish fleet which was brought to England, the survivors of the expedition enjoyed a share of the prize money, ranging from £1,500 for a General down to £2, the equivalent of 40 days pay for a private soldier.
Henry Cowper served as Paymaster of the 7th Line Battalion, King's German Legion and was present with the Brigade detached to Stralsand under the personal command of the King of Sweden, Gustavus IV; subsequently he took part in the expedition to Sweden in 1808 under the command of Sir John Moore.
As a Staff Officer Henry Cowper held the rank of Captain, he would have worn a uniform and carried a sword.

In Dame Charlotte Lopes Will Dated 9th July 1831 reads...

Lydia is Rebecca's sister.  Anne could be Abigail Ann, another sister?  Charlotte Cowper is obviously related to Henry Cowper.  For symmetry Jane Stimpson is probably a family relative of Henry also - not proven

Family lived in South America for a long time.

His wife, Abigail alias Anne Locke, widow, born 1782 Kingston, Jamaica , died 28.3.1853 aged 71 at Plymouth.  Her brother, Manasseh died 3 weeks later on 20 Apr 1853.

There is a possible 1841 Census record called "LockSamuel&AnnC1841.jpg" which shows a Samuel Lock aged 60 Labourer and Ann Lock aged 65 in Portsmouth, Portsea Military Row.  There are 2 problems with this
1)«tab»Ann should be shown as born in Foreign parts (not)
2)«tab»Samuel was a reverend (Ann would not have married below her station)
Therefore, the above Census is taken as invalid.

21. Lydia Leah Lopez Pereira

In a letter from Peter Thomas Pereira just before Easter in 2003, he writes:-
Dame Charlotte in July 1831 also names her 4 nieces, the sisters of Manasseh Lopes Pereira, which proves that one of the sisters had died between July 1831 and April 1850.  How (adp 041114)?

Will of Dame Charlotte Lopes,  (DATE dated 7 Jul 1831, filed 9 Jul 1831, proved 11 Jun 1833): "Testatrix also gave and bequeathed directed limitted and appointed unto her niece Leah als Lydia Basden Wife of Charles Basden Esquire & Commander in the Royal Navy £1,000 Stock other part of the said £10,000 Stock and unto each of their two Children then living £100 Stock on their attaining their respectively ages of 21 years.  "

This must have been Charlotte Sophia Frances and Charles Brenton (Basden) as we know that both Lydia and the first child had both died by 1823.

May I list my "India" interests in the hope of attracting connections / info / comments

My 4G Grandfather - Edward William BUTLER, born c1769 arrived India c1783 as a cadet - promoted through to L. Col (Bengal Artillery HEIC)

at the time of his death in 1819 (Agra).

His (presumed) second marriage in Oct 1806 was to Harriet Christie widow of Charles Christie (Died 1805).

He had a son Edward William (born Calcutta 1795). Baptised - 17 / 4 / 1798 (Calcutta) died in 1808.

He also had a daughter Caroline Ann Sophia (born 1790). Baptised - 17 / 4 / 1798 (Calcutta) who may have married James Nicholson.

Another son also Edward William (my 3G Grandfather) born May 1806 (Cawnpore). Baptised - 2 / 12 / 1808 was in India until at least mid 1830's.

Many Thanks

Marriage Notes for Isaac Lopez Pereira and Caroline Ann Sophia Butler

MARRIAGE: In Dame Charlotte Lopes will dated 9 July 1831 she mentions "...Nephew Isaac Pereira and his six children"
Of the 11 children in this marriage, 9 were born before the above date.  Only Sophia Russell Pereira is known to have died before this date.
At this time it was known that the Lopes / Pereira families kept in touch, so the likelyhood is that 2 others of this family had died by this date.  Which?
