NOTE  Peter T.Pereira writes on 8.11.1999 that the most prominent is 'Isaac, son of Benjamin Pereira.' Died 4th December 1738, age 38 years 2 months 19 days.
Portuguese.  The design on the stone is 'A Hand from the Clouds felling a Tree \emdash   A Cherub in the Clouds'.  An inscription in Portuguese and an inscription in Hebrew from Genesis 35.29 reads "And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him."
The above suggests that there may well have been more children in Jamaica who did not migrate to the UK as none of the children shown on the family page are named either Esau or Jacob.

Marriage Notes for Rachael Rodrigues Lopez and Isaac Pereira

MARRIAGE: Peter T.Pereira writes 4.5.2000 "Both Wills (Sarah Lousada and Abigail Pereira) mention Rachael Pereira the wife of Isaac.  Sarah in London in November 1786 says, Rachael of Jamaica, while Abigail says on 15th January 1791, Rachael, late wife of Isaac, now in London. Rachael was therefore in London before January 1791, which narrows down the time of her arrival in England considerably.
Isaac, Rachael's son was born in Jamaica on 9th January 1788. Isaac, her husband died 4th December 1788 and was buried in Jamaica.  Rachael was then left with nine children, the oldest two were only 16 and 15. One daughter, Esther has not been traced.
Rachael's parents, or at least her father, Mordecai Rodrigues Lopes was in England on 6th February, 1782, the day that he was Granted Arms.  It would have been an enormous help to have a member of her own family to meet her."

13. Manasseh Masseh Lopez

The most important Sephardi settler in the South-West, because of the part which he and his collateral descendants played in local and national affairs, was Manasseh Masseh Lopes. Lopes was born in Jamaica in 1755, where his father Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes had made a fortune from sugar plantations. He married Charlotte, only daughter of John Yeates of Monmouth, on 19 October 1795. [Information from pedigree entered at Herald's College by Masseh Lopes, 20 January 1806.] His father died six months later and left his fortune to Manasseh. He came to Devon in 1798, when he bought the manors of Maristow, which became his principal seat, Buckland Monachorum, Walkhampton, Shaugh Prior, and Bickleigh; and in 1808 he added the manor of Meavy, in all some 32,000 acres. Manasseh and Charlotte had an only daughter Ester who died in 1819, aged 23. Presumably she had never been expected to have children because when Manasseh or Massey, as he elected to be called, was created a baronet in 1805, there was an exceptional remainder to his nephew Ralph Franco. [Hyamson, Sephardim of England, p. 203. From this Sir Ralph were descended Lord Justice Lopes (Henry Charles Lopes) &emdash; later Lord Ludlow, Lord Roborough (Sir Massey Henry Lopes), and the future Viscount Bledislow. The family generously supported Exeter University when it was the University College of the South-West.] Massey was first elected to parliament in 1802 for New Romney, and he subsequently represented Barnstaple, Grampound, and Westbury. [For fuller details of his political career, see W. G. Hoskins, 'sheaf of modern documents', Devonshire Studies (1952), H. P. R. Finberg and W. G. Hoskins, eds., pp. 412-18.]

On April 5, 1910 in a letter to Willie Whittington, George wrote, "With regard to Sir M.M. Lopes' will, I think it must be the same money I tried to claim some years ago, and was told that we had nothing to do with it. Toppy [Beatrice] ... wrote to Sir H. Lopes who very civily replied that he knew nothing about it and advised her to search in Somerset House for the will. Maud wrote there and was informed that the will was not there but in Salisbury. She then wrote to Salisbury and was informed that no such will has been found. Maud is going to have another try."

In the Dictionary of National Biography (1893) is the following entry:
"Lopes, Sir Manasseh Masseh 1755-1831, politician, a descendant of a family of Spanish Jews, and only son of Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes of Clapham, Surrey, by his wife Rebecca, daughter of Manasseh Pereira of Jamaica, was born in Jamaica on 27 Jan. 1755.

In 1796 he is mentioned in his father's will as "Manaseh Lopes."

In "Benny's History" Page 5 February 2000 - The Lopez Scroll
'Fernando Lopez was a wealthy man from Jamaica, who wanted to be an English Gentleman.  He got himself baptised and gave all his Jewish things to the Emdon family.  Amongst the items was a little Sefer Torah and they gave it to the Shul and it is still in the Ark and is now used as a Show piece.

"The History of the Emdon Family" by Bertram Harris Emdon  April 1977
'Sir Massy Manassey Lopez came to the West in the last decade of the XV111 th century and bought the Maristow house and estate from the West country Slanning Family.  He abandoned the Jewish Faith in 1802, but his family scroll of Law was presented to, and is still in possession of, the Plymouth Synagogue'

Polly Lawrence wrote, "It would appear, from various notes on the family that I found, that the Lopes family came to Devon when Mannessah [sic] Masseh Lopes bought the estate of the late Sir James Modyford Heywood in 1798, presumably using part of the fortune left to him on his own father's death.
The note continues: 'This estate comprised the manors of Maristow, Buckland Monachroum, Walkhampton, Shaugh Prior and Bickleigh. In 1808 he purchased Meavy from Hugh Malet and calculated that he then owned thirty-two thousand acres in Southwest Devon. The Lopes family had originated in Cuba, but moved to Jamaica where a knighthood was bestowed for services to the Crown. Sir Mannaseh Masseh Lopes was born in Jamaica in 1755. His father - Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes - was a wealthy sugar plantation owner who had come to England and settled in Clapham. Mannaseh [sic] was an only son and after inheriting his father's large fortune, came to Devon in 1798, when the Heywood Estates were in the market. This, of course, included the lovely sited house of Maristow, which he made his principal seat.'"

In the IGI is a record for the Christening of Manasseh Lopes on 30 Jun 1802 at Saint Pancras, Old Church, London, England. His father's name is given as "Mordet Lopes" and his mother is "Rebecca."

"In 1802 he abandoned judaism, conformed to the practices of the church of England, and was returned to parliament for New Romney, and on 5 Oct. 1805 was created a baronet (Gent. Mag. 1805, ii. 1231), with remainder to his nephew, Ralph Franco, only son of his late sister, Esther, wife of Abraham Franco, and he obtained a licence under the sign-manual to take the name of Masseh before his own. In 1812 he was returned to parliament for Barnstaple.  Subsequently he arranged with one Hoare, a voter at Grampound in Cornwall, to procure his return for that constituency by dividing 2,000£ among the sixty freeholders of the borough. For this he was brought to trial at Exeter assizes before Mr. Justice Holroyd and a special jury on 18 March 1819, and on conviction was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and to pay a fine of 1,000£. This conviction of a baronet and a member of parliament for corruption marks a great advance in the public demand for electoral purity.  Pending this trial he had been returned for Barnstaple in 1818. His return had been petitioned against; it was proved that he had spent 3,000£ in bribes, and had bribed sixty-three out of three hundred resident electors at 5£ each. The committee before which it was heard reported that it deserved the serious consideration of the house, 9 March 1819. The house thereupon unseated him, and on 2 April directed the attorney-general to prosecute him, and he was sentenced on 13 Nov. by the court of king's bench to a further fine and term of imprisonment. But this mishap did not exclude him from public life. On his release from gaol he was returned in 1823 for his pocket borough of Westbury, though he was very unpopular there, and again in 1826, but he resigned the seat, upon what consideration is unknown, to provide one for Peel on his rejection by the university of Oxford in 1829. He died on 26 March 1831 at his seat, Maristow House in Devonshire, leaving a fortune of 800,000£, principally in government and East India stock, but also in land near Plymouth. He was a magistrate for Devonshire and Wiltshire, and recorder of Westbury. He married Charlotte, daughter of John Yeates of Monmouthshire, by whom he had a daughter, Esther, who died on 1 July 1819. His nephew and heir, Ralph Franco, assumed the surname Lopes on succeeding to the baronetcy."

MP for Evesham, S.Devon, Barnstable, Westbury

Passed Baronet Title to nephew Ralph Franco on his death in 1831

In "A Record of the Jews in Jamaica," Jacob Andrade wrote, "Sir Manasseh Masseh Lopez (1st Bart.) - English politician; born in Jamaica on January 22, 1755. Descended from ancient Sephardic stock. One of Jamaica's opulent families. In 1802 he was returned to Parliament for New Romney (having along with his father Mordecai Henriques Lopez embraced Christianity in that year).   Between then and 1826 he was elected to Parliament on four occasions for various Constituencies. Lopez subsequently filled the office of Recorder of Westbury in Wiltshire, in addition to being a magistrate for two Counties. He was granted the rights by George III of Armorial Bearings on 1st November, 1803, and created a Baronet on 1st October, 1805, with remainder to his nephew Ralph Franco, only son of his sister Esther, wife of A. Franco. Lopez purchased in 1810 Westbury (the Urban District in the Westbury Parliamentary Division of Wiltshire) from the Earl of Abingdon. He died at Maristow House, Devonshire, on March 26, 1831, without leaving issue, and the Baronetcy developed to his nephew. The Baronetcy has become extinct." [p. 148]

In a letter from Exeter, dated 22 June 1820, Sir Manasseh Masseh Lopes informs the Rev. Daniel Lysons about his large estate in south west Devon, near Plymouth. He had bought the estate from the late James M Heywood, through the latter's executors in 1798. This comprised the manors of Maristow, Buckland Monachoram, Walkhampton, Shaugh Prior and Bickleigh. In 1808 he rounded this off with the manor of Meavy, bought from Hugh Malet, esquire. "I calculate, that I have about 32,000 acres belonging to me altogether in a ring fence, including commons, waste land, etc.

This letter was almost certainly written from the Devon County Prison at Exeter, where Lopes was serving the sentence of two years imprisonment passed on him in the King's Bench Division on 13 November 1819 for outrageous electoral bribery, both at Grampound in Cornwall and at Barnstaple.

Sir James Modyford Heywood was buried 22 April 1798 at Bickleigh.  His memorial, now lost, apparently did not record his age.  The name of his wife, and where he married, is not known.

The co-heiresses jointly sold the Estate to Manasseh Massey Lopes in 1798. He was descended from a Jamaican jewish (j not J) family. But what, precisely, linked the Lopes family to the Modyfords –                  the "Jamaican connection" which must presumably have led to the purchase of Maristow by Sir M.M. Lopes –                  is not clear.  Co-heiresses (four daughters) of the above (James Modyford Heywood); Sophie C. Musters, Emma Bertie, Maria H. Montolieu and Frances Hunter.

Friday is calculated as 25th June, 1819
email PTP 26 Sep, 2007

aged 24 daughter of Sir MMLopes Bart of Maristowe and hence borne before 1 Jul 1795
may not have been biological daughter as the (adoptive) parents' marriage was late in 1795
she was probably a niece Esther Franco #745 named after her mother who died soon after the birth

As both her parents died before 1800 it is safe to assume that Esther 1409 and Esther 745 are the same person
